Just got a Kindle as a way to kick start me into reading. Its a habit I would like to start and what better way to do it then with the kindle.

Likes: Sci Fi, foreign culture & travel, self improvement..ect.

Any suggestions? I know absolutely 0 authors so I have no preferences.

Some of my favorite science fiction which are all very well known are:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    Dune
    Ender's Game
    The Stand
    I Am Legend

You might also enjoy The Hunger Games. It's a young adult novel (I'm not even aware of your age but I thought it worth stating), but it's an easy read, and very good. If you are not much of a reader it might do you well to read the Harry Potter series. Once again a young adult series, but very good, and they read quick and easy.

Here is a list of free books I have read on my Kindle and that I enjoyed. Free from Amazon. (Have about 10 on my Kindle I have yet to read)

    Nasty Little F!#*ERS
    Uncle Flynn
    The Heart of an Assassin
    Vermin
    Dust
The Old Man and The Wasteland

Do you want long or short reads? I'd skip Game of Thrones as a warming-up book.

Fiction: World War Z is a quick read. Look into The Talented Mr. Ripley and Ripley's Game, etc. Michael Crichton books, Star Wars books

Non-Fiction/Travel: Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Into the Wild.

The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul

Anything by Kurt Vonnegut - try Slaughterhouse 5 since you like sic-fi

Go to Baenebooks.com they have many of their books free for download. Try out two of my favorite military SciFi writers, John Ringo and David Weber

John Ringo's first book of his first series is great take on alien invasion of earth, I have read every book in the serires several times over. First is A Hymn Before Battle. Here is the download page. http://www.baenebooks.com/p-217-a-hy...re-battle.aspx

David Weber started an Epic story line with his first Honor Harrington book, first female protagonist that I actually enjoyed reading about. Here is download page for On Basilisk Station http://www.baenebooks.com/p-304-on-b...k-station.aspx

These two authors also teamed up for another scifi military series which blends high tech military scifi with a progression through different levels of tech from spears to black powder, great believable alien characters and non-stop action. First book is March to the Sea, http://www.baenebooks.com/p-265-march-to-the-sea.aspx

There are tons of free books offered for the Kindle. Sometimes the author just feels like being a nice person, or because they want to get their material out there into peoples hands.

Just search in the kindle store for terms like "free science fiction" or "free mystery".

Patrick Rothfuss - The Name of the Wind and the second in that series, The Wise Man's Fear. Trust me on this.

Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson - it reads like it should be an action movie
Armor - John Steakley - also similar. if you've ever played Halo it will seem eerily familiar
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card - is amazing
Dune - Frank Herbert - very cool

oddly enough, I enjoyed The Hunger Games trilogy (read it once I knew the movie was coming out). It has its annoying parts, especially the way it's written in the female 1st-person voice, but it's still a quick one.

there are also quite a few good motorcycle books if you're into that
