GTI we have now
Polo GTI for the same price
Polo GTI but only if cheaper than current GTI
There was an article from an Australian publication that compared a GTI DSG and a Polo GTI DSG. The Golf GTI was quite a bit faster, and much more stable around turns and on the hwy (surprise!)

Yes, I am also pretty sure, that the Golf GTI is objectively speaking the superior car.
A German car mag tested them side by side as well and came to the conclusion that the Golf GTI is the far better car and everybody interested in either of these cars should try to buy the Golf.
I have looked at both cars in detail - as I think about replacing my aging Golf in some time - and found that the seating position in the Polo is very high and not very sporty. Also VW relocated the battery in the trunk of the Polo for weight distribution reasons which generally is good, however as a result the trunk space of the Polo is really small and therefore taking away quite a bit of its everyday usability (which is the great thing about hot hatches). Also I found some options missing, that you can get in the Golf GTI (dual zone ac). And yes, the Polo GTI is DSG only even here in Europe, though that is not a disadvantage in my view.
The Polo in it's current guise is pretty damn small. And in the US where we don't "need" rather small cars, nor do we get tax or insurance incentives for smaller cars --- the market does not exist for small premium cars. Sure, a handful (the occasional person buying a $35K Mini, or a $25K Abarth 500 etc.) appear...but the business case is probably frightfully small.
The Polo GTI looks like a fun car, but honestly, unless you could get the GTI model at 15-16K, it'd be a non-seller at 19-20K. I just don't think the market exists. I think the market exists for a normal or TDI Polo, but a premium model? Doubt it.
Are any other makers planning something like it? Has Mazda made any intentions to offer a Mazdaspeed 2?
I have the impression that most people in the States don't know that the Polo is nothing more than a cheap econobox in Europe, not some sort of premium transportation. It cracks me up when I read people complaining about the lack of manual transmission.... Dude, it's a frickin' Polo, it was ment to take you from point A to B economically, it's the Corolla of VW.

Golf GTI everytime.
I may be going it alone on this one, but I do wish that VWoA would kill the 3-door GTI and replace it with the Scirocco, and keep the 5-door GTI going.

its funny because pre mk5 I would have said polo all day long.... but the truth..... the truth is the polo got too damn big, its not much smaller then the gti if you have had the good luck to see both at the same time sitting next to each other. so in that case I would rather the 2.0tsi over the 1.4 thanks.
