Need help with test please....

I'm getting ready to use VAG-COM to see if my catalytic converter is toast. I read to begin test that the brake pedal had to be depressed and the throttle needs to be wide open (for 1.8T). After the test begins do I stay on the throttle?

Depends on the exact variant of the ECU. When in the correct Basic Settings group, some ECUs will maintain the RPMs in the desired range automatically when you have one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas, but with others, you have to maintain the RPMs in the correct range manually.

Got it. It states to hold throttle "wide open". I assume that would be just below the redline?

Holding the brake then gas should limit the RPM to about 2000 or so to heat the cat. If it doesn't limit the RPM don't take it to red line! If the ECU doesn't limit the RPM something is wrong.
