Is there exhaust flow out the tail pipe? Are there current fault codes? More input>

OK I have a 2000 1.8 with a Apr chip intake dv and cat back. I was driving home somewhat hard and started to smell something and was peaking at 10 so I popped the Hood and the Turbo was glowing red. So today it wont go over 10 psi and sluggish. What I'm wondering could it be the cat or Turbo? Appreciate any help thanks

I was peaking around 18-17 holding 16-14 I have a 2.5 custom magnaflow cat back no resonator and it seem quiet compare to other 1.8 I've heard but it is original cat on car Idk what caused the problem

Sounds like the turbo could be suffering from oil starvation. Check your oil level number one - If the level is good you could still have an issue with delivery to the turbo itself.

I checked oil this morning it was a little low I added more and it didn't change what would you suggest to start to troubleshoot what is causing it? Newer to turbos and learning as I go thanks for your insight

Scan for codes. If you get a bad bank 2 o2 code, it's the cat. If the exhaust is restricted the turbo can't produce more psi. Exh flow = turbo spinning = psi

did it smell like rotten eggs? im not too familiar with the a4 since i just bought one but have years and years experience with dsm's sounds like you melted part of the cat(the inside) causing too much back pressure off the turbo causing it too glow red. You will have oil being burnt up a little since the bearings are getting over heated from the turbo itself. Since you have a secondary o2 delete you wont throw any codes unless you get too much backfire and it causes a misfire in one of your cylinders.

Now its in the 4 to 5lb range and it has no cel can it go limp with out cel? I can't take the cat off till I get money

i cant imagine that a turbo would fail with these symptoms. i would say plugged cat.

I have APR stg 1 on my car with intake and DV and just put in a test pipe with the stock exhaust. I can see the difference in how fast the k03 spools up now ! 2.5 " coming, but that stock cat holds so much back on the turbo. good luck look into a HFC or TP worth the money

I can get my exhaust shop to make a test pipe for 170 installed or buy a premade one so I'm not sure what route to go any differences in them? Thanks

Your cat is clogged, which is causing way too much back pressure. That in turn is making your turbo overheat, because the exhaust isn't exiting like it should. I have a Labree HFC for sale, if you want to go that route. Or an ebay test pipe will be good.

I got my test pipe for $75 shipped from the classifieds on vortex...They are out there you just need to look....$170 is way to much for a test pipe

My ebay test pipe didnt fit. Front o2 would hit the block. So i ran with out a secondary o2 for a wile till i just made my full tbe. Then both sencors went out. Primary. Replaced it. Then secondary. Yet to replace as its not a big deal. 98 aeb

I was looking around the engine and found the vac line running across front of engine towards Turbo area was completely split so I rigged it back and it is now holding around 14 psi I still am gonna rip the cat out though thanks![]()

"you should throw a spacer on that secondary o2 so your dont get a CEL"
I have seen this what site was it on ?
#26
use a non fowler spark plug spacer. they are in the help section at the parts house. I think the drill bit size I used was a 7/32 or 17/32 which ever is the biggest of the 2. then you will need to sand or file the lower inner dia. for exact fitment.
Any VWs made after 92 are usually only good for drive train donors.

When I replace the cat with test pipe do I need gaskets and hardware?
#29
yes you need gaskets and hardware if your removing a factory cat...
Had this problem a few months ago on the passat 1.8T AEB. Breather system was plugged up and got the turbo so hot i could light a cigarette off of it (and did...)
