Thread: Nevadburgring? From Jalopnik... so take it for what it's worth.

Back on the subject of dirt

Here is a profile of the elevation changes on the Nurburgring:

Highest point is 300 meters higher than the lowest point. That is almost 1,000 FT, which amounts to basically a small mountain.

That's gonna take a lot of dirt.

I saw this earlier and although I'm 100% for it I would prefer a North American Ring, something similar (in length, difficulty, elevation change, etc) to the original ring, but one that's patently different and could actually be used for racing as well. Either way I'd support it.

Cool idea. I would say something similar to the ring but with some unique elements would be cool.

The thing I really wish for is the ability to buy track time without having to do a "track day". It's my understanding that at the Nurburgring you can basically punch a ticket and hit the track. Correct?

The whole elevation thing is puzzling me, too... They should do something like that in PA. There's more Germans here than in Nevada, anyway. That way, we can allow Amish buggies to mix it up with bikes, cars and tour buses.

The idea that you're going to re-create the elevation is freakin joke, and whoever suggested it is either trollin or theyve gone full retard.

Pretty much. Tourist drives are becoming more and more limited, but you can do laps for €26*/lap during certain times.

      *I think that's te new 2012 price.

Well, some people were acting like it was easy as putting some dirt in dump trucks and that's that.

      I agree it's absurd.

While that may be the case, it's not like there isn't an otherwise empty mountain range to the west of Las Vegas with this sort of elevation difference. They have an entire ridge off of Hwy-157 near Angel Peak they could carve into as a means to get the elevation changes they want.

The main problem with Vegas is that the dirt is only a few feet deep. Then you hit caliche

Exactly. I think some of you are assuming we're talking 8,000 acres of totally flat desert.

And those people wondering why pick NV for this and not somewhere in the northeast or whatever? I'm pretty sure the fact that the developer is looking for the BLM to donate 8k acres of land for the project has something to do with it. Simply put, the desert is probably the only place in the US where 8k acres of gov't-owned land isn't already designated as a national park, nature reserve, etc.

What if they scaled down the elevation to create a ring-like experience?

      1/3 scale might do it....

Yeah for sure that would be more feasible. Just that in the OP the guy who said he's going to do it said he's going for an exact replica. Have fun with that!

You guys realize that Vegas is surrounded by mountain ranges right? There are mountains in all directions. That's why it is called the Vegas Valley? We even get snow and have a ski resort.

      To the west:

      To the east:

TO the north (where the speedway is):

      Elevation is not an issue.

you don't really notice it, but the elevation change stuff is ridiculous to even suggest...it might work a little bit, but it'll probably be FLAT.

They have an indoor ski resort in Dubai. Anything is possible. I think it is a great idea. (if it is close to the mustang ranch)

Yeah that's a bit more straightforward than a snaking, 13 mile long track with elevation changes all over the place.

Out of curiosity, how much of that trip is passable after the storms of last week? They were saying a lot of the area around Ooltewah, Etowah, and Cleveland got torn up pretty good.

Would be super dope, especially if you can rent cars to drive on it.

The Eifel "Mountains" really aren't like this... The Appalachians lend themselves more to the topography of the Nürburgring.

The Eifel region is old and worn down, the 'Ring isn't in the Alps or anything.

something else to think about, Miller Motorsports Park has been said to have a big problem with keeping blowing sand off of the racing surface, imagine trying to keep a track the size of the 'ring swept and clean

Also, all the people trying to compare the construction of the track to the various earth moving projects in the middle east, keep in mind that things work much differently for that. A lot of UEA construction is done with what is close to slave labor and those projects are thought of having the potential to recoup investment very quickly being ultra lux residential areas. The income from a racetrack and never holds races, built by a labor force that actually makes an income will be much much different.
