how does everyone feel the esp when it works
i had a 07 civic si that had vsa that you could turn off and when not turned off it would limit the throttle going around corners
does esp work the same way?
i am looking at buying either a 13 golf autobahn or a golf r but i dont like the idea of having it never to turn off
does anyone regret buying the r because of the esp interfering
i probably wont be tracking the car just driving it around and some back roads

I second that but also want to add that even tracking the car in it's stock form I never once had ESP come on. Now that I run a 255/45/17 R Comp track tire with a rear sway and camber plates my grip levels are much higher and ESP is coming on quite a bit on some corner entries. Next time at the track I am really going to try hard to drive around ESP and see how my lap times are effected. If you want to have fun in the snow in a parking lot or something, just pull the ABS fuse and have at it!

For those with Rs with exhausts / stage2+..
I sort of like the ESP. Leave it on, blast through a corner. The throttle will cut once or twice, making the car sound like it is a DSG farting in between shifts![]()

Is it a smooth transition between on throttle off throttle or it a full power cut and the car wiggles a lil? I had the esp light blinking at me for the first time this weekend but I couldn't feel the throttle cut. It was more like a partial closure of the throttle vs a full close and blow off like my mk4 GTI does.
#466
When it happened to me (just once, mind you) it felt like the car cut throttle completely and applied brakes just a hair to line the car back up. It all happened in probably half a second and then I got my power back.
Just enough to tell me, "Hey, bozo, you overcooked that corner a bit."
#467
It has come on a lot for me, when trying to power through a corner.
I actually had the rear end kick out a little sideways on me one day when I was making a u-turn. The roads were wet from rain and I got on it hard as I was making the u-turn. ESP kicked in and killed the fun.....Then again, maybe it kicked in and killed any chance of me wrecking my car.

This is good to know. I am considering Stage3+ when it comes out. Currently at Stage2+ this does not happen on the power. Even around a near 90 degree corner in 1st gear and standing on it half way through the car just RIPS around the corner with no drama like a rocket! So it seems with Stage3 you can overcome grip. This may be where a haldex controller gets real handy.

So since APR, REVO, GIAC all claim to be able to turn ESP off but won't give us the power, where does that leave the guys with Maestro? Has Chris Tapp made his opinion on this public?
#472
I am not......Not at this point...
I'm pretty sure APR is working on a Haldex solution/option..... Maybe Arin knows if they really are or not. I had heard they were looking into it.
I imagine being able to send more power to the rear has to really help balance this car out in the twisties.

I'm like 99% sure it is and some vender like apr will market it and guess what, people will pay cuz they want to drift and don't know any different. I'm hoping that racer guy that pulling his car apart for lite weight pieces will figure it out and let us know. Personally I'm half temped to wire a switch for the front abs sensor in the cabin and use a haldex controller in race mode. I have no idea if the ecu will over ride the signal of the race mode when the sensor stops working tho. Still on hold for now, I don't need anything right way.

First, you have it backwards. The manufacturer can put an option to fully disable. A non-manufacturer cannot as the traction control falls under a safety mechanism. Safety mechanisms cannot be modified in any way by a non-manufacturer. Second, there is a big difference between DOT safety requirement violations and CARB.
#484
I know the difference, carb is more strict than dot so carb by default is approved the way I understood it. Here in Washington I was told no modification of any kind was legal. I got pulled over for a loud exhaust and right when the cop was explaining it to me a vette passed by so loud I couldn't hear him talking. Was so damn funny! Just a verbal warning and ever since I've had turbo cars.
Oh thanks for explaining to me the esp thing, I thought it only applied to the manufacturers.![]()

The HPA Competition controller keeps the rear wheels engaged at all times. No slip or less traction necessary. I have it, its a great upgrade!![]()

Still not getting it. CARB is for emissions. DOT covers car safety and a whole host of other regs. Not the same thing at all. Not a superset or anything. Each state sets their own emissions requirements.
CARB is fine. Not ideal for enthusiasts but it has greatly reduced air pollution. Fact.
Now there are some really dumb parts of it, like not being able to put on a perfectly good used catalytic converter. And I still don't get the visual inspection thing. If you pass you pass, who cares what the engine looks like as long as you aren't bypassing your exhaust or anything really crazy. The aftermarket intake for example has no negative emissions impact and yet will cause you to fail visual.

LMFAO for YEARS I thought they were the same but carb was California's more strict program! Thanks for clearing that up HAHA!![]()

I've spent a bunch of time, and some money (about $500) working on figuring this out....I think I will try and test my theory this weekend after giving my wallet a small rest. I had a request in another thread for Canadian Golf R codes...but was told "it's been posted earlier in the thread" (btw - great way to not support someone trying to figure out an issue) and I only have one Canadian Golf R code to go off of (there may be more...but I haven't done a recent search).....when I have 3 different US codes to figure out what I need/want done.
If it works out...it will be a rather simple fix....
