96 Jetta 2.0L died

My roommates Jetta died last week while he was driving around and cranks but won't start. Took to shop and have ruled out fuel pump and replaced several parts of the vacuum system. They don't have a computer that scan the car properly. I am hoping to A, maybe get some suggestions I can try on his car and B, maybe find someone willing to lend me a Vag cable. Thank you

We finally found a universal scanner that would work and it only popped one code P1582, which it said was Idle Adaptation at limit. NO clue what that means

That wont prevent the car from running.. - You verified fuel supply? Do you have spark?

Should've gave us a shout before your friend took it to that so-called shop. part changers aka hacks just waste the customer's time and money. To get back onto the subject, I would start where Jason suggested. check air, fuel, and spark as thats only what an engine needs to run. Then its a matter of finding what component is causing the issue. ABA's are pretty simple, as its really only like 4 sensors that are inputs to the ecu to control all that.

For anyone interested, he is wanting to sell. It is a 96 Jetta Trek Edition 2.0L 5-Speed Manual. Would have to double check on the mileage. Body has some minor damage, tune up done kinda recent he said, clutch is less than a year old. I can get pics for any interested. He is looking to get $800 for it
