Thread: Tiguan tow capacity? North America Vs The rest of the world

  1. 03-12-2012 01:18 AM #1
Reading up about Tiguan tow capacity.

Worldwide reports seem to say it can tow 2000kg (4400lbs)
North American (Canada and USA) report 2000lb.

Id like to tow my boat twice a year for a total of less than 20 miles. The boat and trailer weighs in at around 4400lbs

    I dont want a Touareg!!

from searching this forum i found one users comment that mentions.....

"The towing weight is lower (in North America) due to the tow hitch being bolted to the rear bumper I believe. In the rest of the world they remove some parts and install a real tow hitch."

The user comment about being bolted to the bumper is not correct, the hitch is bolted to a crossbar that is bolted to the frame. However in ROW, the remove this crossbar and install a different one that is stronger. Even if you got one and installed it here in NA, your door plaque still states the lower tow capacity and in some locals, you could be fined for overloading.

    Gents,

I think I may have stumbled on to why we only get 2200lbs towing. Only the countries that have the 7 speed DSG gearbox has the higher rating. I looked at Canada specifically and they are limited also and they have the 6 speed gearbox like us. Aussies and Europe that have 7 speed DSG all have the higher limit. This has been the only difference between them that I can find. We have the weaker tranny!

... since the DSG in the Sportwagen TDI has no two rating at all, IIRC. That was a big reason why we went for the Tig instead of the TDI.

Gear box has absolutely nothing to do with it. We (ROW) only got the DSG box a couple of years back but we've always had the higher tow rating.

In the Real World, you'd be (barely) ok (boat = weighs more than one thinks w/fuel/fluids/soaked carpet/etc.). Here in North America, however, we have to live in the world of VWGoA + Dewey, Cheatem, & Howe, ESQ.

+1 - and don't forget the real strain is going to be when you start and stop - I assume you are hauling that big boat from storage to the water in spring, and back again in fall? The strain on the hitch is at its max when you are trying to pull out of the water and the trailer wheels are sinking into the mud that was 2 feet under water back in the spring Not sure I'd want to do that with my Tig - my boat, motor and trailer together is only 1800lbs and the Tig handles that easily, but 4400?
