got a 1982 jetta with about 300k on chassis and 100k on motor. less than 200 miles ago i put a Giles Super pump, metal headgasket, timing belt/tensioner, ARP head studs and boost controller and the GTD injectors. The only thing left to do to the motor is an intercooler so you can take advantage of the 30psi of boost. Compression is great, oil pressure great.
The previous owner of this car kept service records including MPG readings at every point he filled up the tank. The engine is meticulously maintained. Never been run on veggie oil or any of that crap. I put raceland coilovers and wheel spacers on when I got the OG snowflakes less than 2k miles ago, closer to 1k but I’m not positive. Sits flush and handles like a gokart. I’ve also got a lower and upper brace I’ll throw in if the price is right.
I’ve bled the brakes and put drilled rotors and race pads on it and new rear wheel cylinders and new wheel bearings. The drums and shoes have plenty of life left in them so I left them alone.
The paint on the car still has some shine to it. it’s definitely not show perfect but it’s really in great shape. The interior is surprisingly clean for how old it is. The radio is currently not installed, I have a tape deck unit I can throw in but I suggest just buying a nicer one and putting it in there. The rear view mirror needs to be reattached and the turn signals work but don’t return back after a turn unless it’s hot out. I have a stalk sitting in the car to fix it but I haven’t had the chance to install it. it also needs glow plugs and the timing to be fine tuned, but I should be able to get that done this weekend, I have the tools just not the time! runs great, just smokey on start up. has a new battery as well.
I really don’t want to sell this car, but it’s kind of come to it. ideally I would swap this motor into my caddy and the motor from my caddy into this car, but I just don’t have the time to do this. if you would be willing to help me do this, I could work out a killer deal on the jetta with the caddy motor on it. also a 1.6td but not built for power like this one, the caddy gets around 50mpg. Please feel free to ask questions. current reg and clean title.
forgot to mention, zero rust, five speed trans, had AC but was removed. the rear passenger side door also has an issue, the hinge is loose so it sags when it's opened. i just leave it closed all the time. california owned car since day 1.
How does the car drive with the updated pump and injectors vs a stock 1.6TD?
Is it me or does it look like the front bumper is a little off on the passenger side?
drives like a bat out of hell
well a lot faster. the boost kicks in pretty early and the updated pump has a gov mod so the power doesn't drop off like on a stock pump. it also doesn't blow black smoke anymore which is a good thing because of EGT's but not as much fun while being tail gaited. i don't think the front bumper is off, the rear sags on the passenger side but as far as i know the front is dialed. i'll measure each side this weekend. i took those pictures in a tight spot so i had to put my camera on the ground and angle it, so i think its that.
with the pump and injectors it's like a whole new animal. Giles knows his stuff.
Can I ask what that cost you? I am looking to do these mods myself
the pump i got was a stage 2 pump, a little excessive if your not looking for gobs of power. the stage one is around $800 plus a core. i bought the setup off of someone who ended up going TDi for around $1200 which is a good deal. saved me a few hundred $
i highly recommend it if you have the money. if you haven't done the Gov mod yet do that right away, it'll change your car. just make sure you don't rev it past 6k
front bumper looks fine in person, i'll try and figure out how to measure it in a few mins
