Looks good! You have the Right harness. Little black connector tells me it's compatible. Did you add an attachment to those paddles? They come stock black

When I opened up the wheel for pics I figured I would change the stock paddles to some osir ones I had ordered some months before. You can see the name in one of the pics.

    They're supposed to be aluminum.

It was same for me (new car, first mod) hardest part is getting airbag off. You will also need a triple square bit to remove the wheel(hard to find) got mine at napa for 5 bucks. Also note the bolt can only be removed 5 times before it needs to be replaced. Mark it everytime you may take it off so you can keep track. Your also going to need vcds to program all buttons. If you do it and have any questions let me know. Good luck

Opened mine up tonight, looks the same as pictured above, and have the black connector box. Only difference is my part number on the airbag: *001PQTN35XT2* Does this mean anything?

Jettsy: Is it really as simple as removing 1 bolt (the triple square bolt)? And is there a size to this bolt? Any special instructions when attaching the yellow connector?

    Thanks all!

wouldn't worry about the airbag part number, lots of rolling changes with that stuff. Should work just fine.

I believe your going to want a 12mm Triple square bit. There are many sources on the net to replacing the wheel properly. Do a search here on vortex you'll find ample amounts.

Tips off the top of my head would be:
    • Be patient (mainly getting the airbag out, pretty snug from the factory)
    • Use a mirror to see behind the wheel when removing the bag
    • disconnect battery and when done with install, turn car on from passenger side just in case it blows up lol. (never know better safe than sorry)
    • code wheel using VCDS/Vag Com (coding will be under central electric and instruments)
    • make sure when connecting everything the cables are fastened securely. (if horn doesn't work or buttons dont light up something is not connected properly )

OK great! This entire wheel, L and R side buttons will need to be coded in vagcom? Or just the R side because my current wheel has L buttons? And do I remember correctly that you were able to make the DSG paddles work on a tiptronic trans?

in your case, paddle shifts will work automatically and left side should be fine too.

Only coding needed will be right side in the instruments module

Finally wrestled off the airbag clips and swapped steering wheels. Buttons worked like before. Steering wheel calibrated fine.

Paddles don't work. Shouldn't the paddles work out the box as I have a dsg with manual mode already?

Yes there is no coding to get paddles working at least there was not for Jettsy and I. I would guess there is a loose connection somewhere

Came across a thread on myturbodiesel showing a setting for tiptronic in the steering wheel section so I will give that a try tomorrow. I don't think there is a lose connection as the light that illuminates the paddle shifter located on the paddle shifter module is lit red.

Hopefully it is just a vcds coding fix cuz I seem to have really hard times taking off airbags.

They let me buy it thru eBay. Cost a bit more to cover fees but at least you've got the backing of eBay and PayPal.

The seller hasn't been responding on this thread and doesn't respond to PM's very well, but people seem to be getting their wheels. I got the right wheel eventually although I'm not happy with how my airbag fits and I've been debating whether it's worth trying to raise the issue with the seller. In the end you have to decide if that hassle is worth the money savings to you.

If I had it to do over again I might spend the extra buying from pgperformance or through a vw dealer, it's a brand new wheel (at dealer prices) but at least the customer service would be there.

  23. 05-15-2012 06:51 PM #58
If you're going the VW Dealer/OEM route. Hit up Douglas VW, in Summit NJ. They are great at getting rare OEM parts, and even offer a nice discount to Vortex members. Last quote for an OEM GLI/GTI/R wheel was about ~$500 (no airbag). Not bad for OEM from a dealer...

Otherwise, $500 for OEM GLI wheel w/airbag is a great deal too...

PS-I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just another happy costumer.

Guess I have read the forums wrong, can someone clarify...

    I have a 2011 jetta TDI

    1. The GLI steering wheel fits
    2. The GTI wheel does not fit unless I buy a new airbag and harness
    3. If I get a GLI steering wheel without airbag, I can remove my airbag and place it in to new wheel with no additional things needed?

    1. Yes.

    2. gli, gti, scriocco (any flatbottom wheel) will require a new bag as yours wont fit. An S airbag would work but a new harness will be needed (or you can use your existing harness which is the same regardless of air bag shape)

    3. NO. there different bags. round mk6 wheels use the same wheels. Flatbottom use the same different bag than yours.

sometimes all it takes a loss of item thats broken or damaged and then the seller is behind on making the refund/being able to sell because now there at loss with there parts. Not an excuse but probably the situation.

Rule of thumb for me and you all should consider is the post count. I dont buy or sell high price items to people with low post counts because its very likely its a scam...ask me how i know.

I had a few people try to scam me on here. They email you fake paypal invoices (i always check paypal.com though). Also, when people dont care for the price to much and are just intrested in buying something then seeing the item then your selling its usually sketch. They all had post counts of 1-20
