hey guys I lowered the car (MK4) last night and when taking it for a test ride discovered some clunking sounds in the rear when going over bumps. Never really heard this sound before thought it was my exhaust but checked that by trying to shake it and hitting it with a rubber hammer and nothing.

did some searching and think it may be the rear axle bushings. car has 325,000km and has been slammed for years so this is the only thing I can think of.

is there anyway to be certain that the bushing are toast, a quick way to check this?

    thanks in advance!

i know my bushings are toast, and they make a clunking noise over bumps, and im on coils. have someone push up and down on the rear end and you watch the axle bushing if it moves alot it need replacement. thats how ive been taught to check. gl

Most times I had that noise it was the lower shock bolt that wasn't quite tight enough. When I went back and tightened that a little more it stopped the noises.
