hey guy, i just bought a 00 jetta VR6 12V 5 speed with 120k miles on motor, its making a weird knocking noise at start up, it knocks then goes away, mostly happens after a an hour or so after driving. wont happen while driving but when i shut it down and come out from a store for example and i start the car it will sometimes knock pretty hard then go away after i rev a lil bit. could it be from bad gas? shift valves? blown motor? idk what it is.... can anyone help me plz! this is my first VR6 and im crushed if its major problem... u can email me at tomtomjr76@aol.com or tommybaltro@gmail.com or txt @3476981309 thanks fellow dubbers.

Rattling yes, grinding sounds no.... Kind of sounds like a deisle knock... But it is. Very weird how it don't happen all the time. I've been trying to rec it but every time it happens I try and get my camera out the knocking goes away.... I have a bad motor mount also... Could that have something to do with this problem???? I know it sounds stupid but hey, I been reading crazier questions on here lol.... Also motor does shake more than usual when it makes that noise. That's why I was thinking by putting low grade gas instead of hi octane.... Idk I'm going nuts over here... I ordered the shift rod and bushings... Looks very easy and I'm going to start there.

i know that vw has a technical bulliten out for a knocking/rattling noise on engine startup. it should go away once oil pressure is up. this is a normal condition (there is no way to fix this sound). i actually proved my instructor wrong at lincoln tech about it. mine does the same thing. about how long does it take for the sound to go away?

The sound will stay from anywhere from 8 to 10 knocks mabey 2 or 3 seconds... The longest I heard it go was mabey 30 seconds... I got scared after 30 and shut it down. When I immediatly started it back up, no noise! Wtf I was kida thinking oil pressure myself or bad gas or the common thing.... The shift rod. I ordered the shift rod and I'm going to give this a shot. I don't have my computer yet to check the issue so I'm stressing the hell out lol. If The previous owner used hi octane and now I'm putting low grade can it make the motor knock deep like that? Its not a tapping sound at all... The sound is a deeeeep knock... I went out for a late night drive last night and the car was purring like a kitten. sound wasn't there so I really don't think the motor can be blown or on its way out right??? Trying to get video of it so I can show everyone exactly what I'm hearing and seeing but can't seem to catch it When I have my cam ready

i doubt anything major is wrong. i would definately put higher octane fuel in it. try the shift rod and see if that works.

Watching this one closely, I just posted one for mine too. Doesn't seem to "go away" on mine or be that loud on fire up either. I can hear mine idling loudly but it doesn't increase in intensity or even be audible at driving speed. My Magnaflow exhaust might be masking any noise though. :p

91 with no ethanol or 93 with ethanol depending on where I fill up. I don't think that's my issue.

ok, i changed the intake shift rod and the noise is back.... could it be oil pump going bad? i do smell a moderate smell of oil when the car does make this sound. normally if the sound was there on (warm star up) id shut it off then start back up and the noise is gone.... for some reason yesterday it was constant! i had to get towed because i didn't want to drive it like that and blow something to bits..... seems like after car is hot and driven for 20 mins or so that when i hear the noise.... it dont make the noise while im driving... only when i shut down then start it up again while its hot... i need help! or someone near queens new york or long island... also im not losing any power or anything... VERY WEIRD!

ok, that sounds nothing like the noise mine makes. if these engines have hydraulic lifters, you could have a collapsed one that could be the issue. like when oil pressure raises, the lifters re-expand. i would definately dig a bit deeper into it if i were you. ill see if i can get a video of mine up to show you the "normal" noise

Ok, knocking is gone! Problem was..... Cracked oil pan, and lack of oil which explains why it never knocked in the morning.... All oil fell to pan so u get adequate oil for a cold start.so I put a new oil pump because I want proper flow of oil to motor. I put castrol syntec 5w 30 oil and she is running like a champ knock free! Smh lol thank you to all who replyed and offered ur help! Much appreciated!

Glad you got your's figured out. Still not sure what's causing mine. I'm changing the oil this weekend and dropping the oil pan to see how it looks. Going to run 10W-40 Mobil 1 High Mileage full Synthetic to see if that has any effect on it if nothing is evident of a problem when I drop the pan. Hopefully it's something simple. Can't afford a rebuild right now that's for sure.
