Good car.
Just keep in mind that if the PO can't produce a hard copy of a bill from a reputable garage for a proper and complete head gasket job, just factor the cost of the job into the purchase price as you WILL be doing them. Probably soon.

Do it.
Still have my 227k mile MKIII... new tranny, clutch, heater core a few years ago... fixed some bad wires this year on the 02 sensor... can't bear to sell it; can't wait to sell it.
I went to a Forester 2.5.xt... as a snowboarder, best decision you can make.
2.0 for life, 224k miles (unless I'm in the 2.5xt)

take a brand new set of coilpacks with you when you go, install them before you ever drive the car, and then have a PPI done on the car.
...and make sure the timing belt and water pump have been done on it as well. If not, factor those two things into the cost of the car when considering purchasing...

I've seen coilpacks bad right out of the box. Look in the 1.8T forum and search around on them a little, you'll be surprised at how badly they are designed. VW and Audi did a recall on them, and last time I checked a set was less than 100.00. The last set I replaced on a customer's car was a 3.0 Audi and he had 4 of his 6 bad, the car was sputtering so much that it barely made it into my garage to change them out. The guy had lived with them for a month though, he just thought it was bad gas, and was driving it still!I just
and replaced them for him, he bought what I recommended, it was from a local FLAPS, and they've been good for the last two months, no CEL on his A6, so we're both happy...

Ummmm...yeah. Replaced the clutch in our old WRX a little over a year ago. It was, by far, the most difficult clutch job I've ever done, and the absolute best price I could find on a clutch was $250. Even AutoZone gets almost $400 for a clutch!
Loved that car, though; when my wife bought her SRX, I sold it instead of the Jeep because it was worth more and also was a bigger liability, due to parts cost.
