When life give you lemons...... How does the rest of that go?
I got my first jetta around here 2 years ago and for whatever reason td engines seem hard to come by. There have been nice cars once in a while for sale in the upper price range but lots of beaters engine wise.

My jetta had blowby when I got it, just curious as to how bad yours is? Mine starts and had good compression and runs good, but lots of pressure out the oil cap with a white cloud of thick crap at idle and I think its coming out of the tailpipe. I use about a quart of oil in 700 miles and have driven the car about 30,000 miles. I got it cheap and it was my first as well and didn't know much.

I actually plan on breaking my engine down in the next few weeks, very curious to see whats really going in there. Did your engine breakdown or have you torn into it?

I wouldn't throw in the towel on that motor quite yet. Check the compression, and if it's good.....might just be the valve guides & seals. Very common at 200,000 miles to have the bottom end in good shape, but the head needs work. If the guides are worn, it'll suck oil in past the intake valve stems, and you'll get a lot of blowby past the exhaust valve stems.

If it starts up easily, I'll put my money on the head needing work as mentioned above.

Why do people never tell what their location is?
Are they in the witness protection program????? Do we need top secret clearance?
    Does it defy national security?

How did it "cost" you the engine? You still have the engine, right?? Fix the damned thing. Buy some wrenches....get busy!

It will turn over, but will not start at this point. I'd love to be able to work on it myself, but between working full time and going to school, I literally don't have the hours in the week to do it, and won't for another year and a half.

Haha I have a good mechanic, just no good time on my hands. The car is for sale now, I've got to have transportation asap so I'm picking something else up tomorrow.

Where are you located at. I have 2 1.6L diesel engines that I would sell. Both are rebuilt. An 85 "ME" mechanical head engine, Totally rebuilt. Bored out and new pistons, all new bearings, cam, exhaust valves and lifters, 3 angle valve job. 2nd, 89 "ME" hydraulic head engine, valve job, bearings and rering job. Both engines complete, belts, injection pump and injectors ( both rebuilt also )
Let me know if you need.
    Thanks: Scott
