Car at hand is a 2001 Passat 1.8t 5 speed Tranny code EHA I believe. This is the best explanation I can give you because the sound if very hard to explain in words and sometimes inconsistent so hard to record... So, when accelerating or if I begin to coast and allow RPM's to drop then reapply throttle I get what can best be described as kind of like a metal pinging or chattering sound. It is less consistent when cold but once warmed up and driving threw town it does it every time I pull away from a stop and every gear change, its only 1-2 seconds long max. Just ping ping ping then goes away until I either change gears, slow down and then apply gas. Clutches and transmissions are one thing I'm not extensively knowledgeable of as I have never had any issues with one or had to work on my own... (self taught wrench turner) so sorry if this sounds foolish, is the best explanation I can give you. Any and all help is extremely appreciated.
Right here too. 2004 GTI 1.8t just crossed 112k and I've had the same issues for a little while (4k miles or so) clutch is acting funny, sometimes shifting is notchy, but inconsistent is an understatement. Sometimes when decelerating, downshifting from 1st to neutral, it seems like it's not completely disengaged. Just a side note there. Things are progressively getting worse, but I'm planning on a clutch job soon, maybe a tranny swap if it's on it's way out. I've read elsewhere on the forums about input shaft bearings, differential carrier bearings, way over my head. If anyone's got some suggestions to check out, I'd like to know as well. One weird thing I noticed, I've lately been getting a "pop-pop" noise from the driver front when turning to the left backing up or going forward. Going to look into that more closely this weekend (strut bearings, ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings?????) But when I jacked up the wheel to check for play, I rotate the wheel back and forth, getting a feel for the backlash and when it seemed like the slack was taken up, it would pop and rotate another 10 degrees or so. This doesn't seem normal. I admit I've got little knowledge of manual trannys other than one clutch I've replaced on another car. Anyone know of this either?
Out side our common mysterious noise, your other problem sounds like an axle knuckle or CV joint clunking, or possible what you listed before being ball joint or ti-rod ends and such.
no one can point me in the right direction? buddie of mine was saying it may be the TOB chattering but I don't know what that would sound like even if it was any thoughts?
I have the same issue. 2001 mk4 5 speed, started noticing it in 5th, sounds like its coming from directly under the linkage. Only with a load on the tranny, it makes a metallic faint grinding noise, sounds like a spun bearing. Not sure what it is, but now it does it in 4th too. Only really starts doing it after driving for a little while and if I let off the throttle it will go away, sometimes it comes right back when Im on the thottle again....dont know what it is but any insight would be nice.
Other than that everything feels fine but I feel like im gonna lose my transmission any minute.
