Thread: Folding bikes... who has one?

  1. 03-20-2012 01:17 PM #1
(Yeah, yeah, I know... folding bikes = dorky... let's get that out of our systems and move on.)

Does anyone here own a folding bike? What are your experiences, likes and dislikes?

I really want one for my daily "house in the suburbs / to commuter train / to office in Chicago" commute.

I wish I could justify the price of a Brompton.

bromptons are expeeeeeensive, like over $1k

i recently picked up 2 identical old folders at a swap meet. both are in non-functional condition but the hope is that one can serve as parts for the other. they were $10 for the both, so it wasn't a big risk

i generally am not a big fan of folders, maybe it's just the aesthetics that i find a little gross, but the MARC train here from baltimore to DC doesn't allow any bikes except folders, and i hate not being able to bring my bike to DC when i visit.

dahon has been making folding bikes for a long time and are quite good, at a cheaper price than brompton

Which is exactly why I don't have one. Awesome bikes, but so expensive... but that's what you get when each bike is hand built in England, performs very well and has the most compact fold of them all.

Yes, Dahon is awesome too. Although I've been looking at Tern bikes recently. Tern is a company started by a former Dahon employee. Check this out....

...also, I love the styling of the If-Mode full size folding bike from Pacific, but it's way too much money and not small enough for my commuting needs. Check it out...
