4 motion 3.6 owners - exhaust

I have the typical "rear 2 resonators/mufflers removed with nice tips"

but I want more of a "R36 no muffler" sound

Since its hard to decifer the comments, I was wondering how exactly to get this sound. I am considering going to my custom exhaust shop and seeing what they say. I still need to keep cat/cats and at least something to keep the car legal for inspection purposes.

Sounds really good... But I would imagine that there would be tons of drone inside the car. I sent out a pm to alvint@borla today about the possibility of fabing a cat back system for our 4motions.He worked on creating the system for the 2.0t and just gave it a shot to see what he says.... http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4498675

I also emailed other companies like magnaflow, apr, and others, but none of them showed any interest.

If we could make a list of those interested in purchasing a cat back system, at a reasonable price, maybe they would be more inclined to fab one for us. I'll start it off:

I have a feeling that some major manufacturers weren't interested due to the complexity of the system and problems with CELs. I would go the custom route. But my custom exhaust guy said that he would highly recommend an h-pipe instead of straight pipes for the sake of the sine wave kickback tripping the CEL. And leaving the cats in place. I don't know much about it, that's just what he said. Almost kind if made me laugh...but it makes sense.

the black arrow that isn't labelled.....i am thinking these are 2 more resonators behind the cats? my car has them also but wasnt sure exactly what they were

I had a rep from Borla contact me. How many 3.6 4 motion owners would be interested in a borla cat-back setup? They're not going to make a system unless they have the numbers.

If you are asking by deleting the resonator will trip a CEL...no it will not. To my understanding, the only way to trip a CEL is when you start playing with the exhaust at the Cats forward.

The first mod I did in my PASSAT 3.2 fsi : small brother of yours was deleting the suitcase resonator: the sound wasn't nice and was too bad for highspeed travels...

the best mod in my case was just deleting the 2 small resonators between the cats and the suitcase.

That's really interesting. I've never heard of anyone deleting the two rear mufflers. I really like the sound clips I've heard from those who deleted the center suitcase. The cars with the two resonators (right behind the cats) deleted sound pretty good too, but I'm very curious how your car sounds with the two rear mufflers removed. Any audio or video clips? It would be great to be able to compare all three.

I've thought of removing the center suitcase and one resonator. My thinking is I would get the deep growl from the suitcase delete and a little added "raspy-ness" by removing just one resonator. Any thoughts?

PS... I'd also be interested in that Borla Cat-Back, but it would have to sound phenomenal... Otherwise I'd just go with the delete options.

the sound is very close, i would say in listening to sound clips vs. mine (not in person) my car sounds much more smooth, no rasp at all. and maybe slightly less noise also

Although not a B6, I have 12V VR6 passat and removed all resonators and mufflers and added a Borla muffler. Sounds great! I also modified the air box.. if VW had made a 3.6 with a manual and AWD, I would have been all over that.. damn you vw!

Borla also have a nice and clean sound.. im sure the 3.6 sounds like beast.

2006-2008 3.6 VW PASSAT. I'm assuming we all have 4motion and they are definitely all automatic.

Joel, have any gains, other than sound been given for the kits overseas?

I have access to a custom shop, but Id be curious to know if modifications to the system can help power at all.

FWIW - the r36 has no pre-cats overseas, this most likely contributes to their power increase compared to us, as well as unique sound. Ive also notice the 2 pipes b/w the second pair of cats and resonators go inward towards one another, then back out before the resonators.(on both r36 and US 3.6) I am debating replacing these with straight pieces at the same time I do a pre-cat delete.

Ive also toyed with the idea of a true dual on the car, but I think the firing order (among other things) would need to be taken into consideration. I think that the stock exhaust, as far as cat back goes, is designed pretty well. With exception of what I mentioned about the bent piping, and the merge by the rear diff.

It is hard for me to put my name on the list without knowing cost, power gains, finish, and sound changes. Especially if they can all be had by replacing a few components individually or at an exhaust shop.

I'm not 100% sure... But I think the cat back exhaust systems for the 2.0t might work with the fwd 3.6 vehicles. If I were u I would check oem part #'s on the exhaust after the cat on both the 3.6 and 2.0t.

Knowing how tight the tunnel is on these cars, with the driveshaft ( and knowing vw guys like to go low) the 2 middle mufflers would need to be shaped like round resonators. to keep clearance that is.

1400 isnt that bad considering I paid 1150 for my 1.8'ts turbo back, and this is a lot more piping.

Lol you guys wanted a company to make exhaust, and this is why they dont do it. because people dont wanna pay. If the gains arent there (or decent sound) then it isnt worht it I agree, but YOU bought the 3.6, and it deserves a quality exhaust. Im just hoping the piping is stainless. the reason they dont offer kits for the car is because of a limited market to begin with. 1400-1500 is reasonable.

Alvint, do you know if an x-pipe and true dual will actually benefit what is essentially an inline motor? I know x+h pipes work good on 90 degree v8s and v6s. But im curious what the thought process is behind choosing that path for the 3.6.
