Thread: 2002 s4 Clutch Replacement

  1. 03-20-2012 08:50 PM #1
So i have a 2002 s4 that i am planning on replacing the clutch in sometime in the near future. I am just doing some research before i start ripping in to this only to find out i dont have the proper equipment, or am just going about it all wrong. So i appreciate an info anyone has on the process and any tips to making it a little easier.

    A few questions i have.

    1. Is it easier to pull the engine out completely or just drop the transmission? ( i may also be replacing the turbos if funds allow for it, so i dont know if that will influence the answer)

    2. Any guess at how long it will take if two people who are pretty well mechanically educated to do?

    3. Anything else recomended to replace while im in there?

Once again thank you to anyone and everyone who can give me some input to this matter. It is greatly appreciated.

To be honest man, you're probably going to want to do everything at once (clutch, turbos, etc) all at once. These motors are such a pain in the ass to work on that you pretty much wanna take care of everything while you have the motor and trans out. The answer to your question is yes, pull the motor.

I took the engine off the bell housing and left the transmission in the car. Took me about 6 hours to remove the engine, including labeling all parts and connections. The only tough part was getting the engine back on the transmission spline, It took two people to get it on haha...ohh and save up some cash and do the turbos while the engine is out!

Awesome!! Thanks so much guys for the advice. After a long weekend i have everything out of the way and im ready to pull the engine. The only question i have now is what do you connect the hoist too? Is there anything on the top of the engine to grab on to or is it easier to craddle the whole thing from the bottom?

Also just a side note, is it bad to have a small amount of oil in the hoses that connect to the back of the intercoolers? Its the same amount from both sides, im assuming thats from the turbos?

A small amount of oil is fine, a lot of oil can mean problems.

As far as hoisting the motor, there are a few hook points on the top of the engine where you can attach a chain or whatever else you have connected to the engine hoist. Just look for them, they are a little hidden but they are there.

So after finally getting the engine back in the car and running, i have a small problem. When i turn the key to start the engine, there is a loud whistle like noise until i let off the key. Then as im driving, i hear a wherring noise as im accelerating. After doing some reasearch someone suggested it might be the starter not disengaging. Can anyone confirm that? Otherwise any other ideas what that might be? Thanks

Ok disregard the last question. I figured out how to fix that last night. Bigger problem at hand is now the driver side turbo is leaking oil pretty badly. Im assuming it is one of the top banjo bolts but i cant tell for sure. After taking the engine out and knowing the pain that was, is there any chance at all to get to those bolts without completely removing the engine? Im assuming not after seeing the placement of them but i want to check all my options before i go pulling the engine out again. Thanks again for any suggestions.
