O2M Shifter Box / Linkage: Need some assistance

Basically you can grab the part I have outlined and simply pull it off of the shifter. Is this normal or should there be some sort of clip holding it on? I've been having some odd shifting problems and wondering if the cause is that piece falling off while driving.

There is a screw that holds it in place. It is in the middle so it pivots off of it.
