I have an Alienware M11x. I downloaded the trial for Premiere Pro. The playback is really slow and jittery. I'm shooting with a D7000. I just dragged the file to make a new sequence. I've changed my file extensions to mpg.
Is my computer just too slow?

what processor/how much ram do you have in it? all my avchd files play back fine on my samsung laptop. it has a 2.53ghz intel core i5 with 8gb of ram. even when it had 4gb, it ran fine. i shoot with a panasonic gh1 that uses the .mts or avchd codec and i'm shooting 1080p/24fps@ or 720p/60fps i don't think you should have issues. the 'mercury playback engine' is actually really good with decoding and all that black magic/wizardry stuff.

what do you mean by this part? 'dragged the file to make a new sequence. I've changed my file extensions to mpg.' you shouldn't have to change any file extensions, pretty much every single video/audio codec is supported. i'm not familiar with the d7000, but what format is the video on that?

Premiere Pro demands a lot of processing power. If I do any color correcting the playback is horribly choppy. I have Sony Vegas on my laptop at home which isn't nearly as powerful as my desk top (which runs Adobe) and it handles HD much better.

I really don't know much about computers. It has an Intel Dual processor and i'm almost positive 4gb of ram.

I googled the problem and found that adobe didn't support D7000 .mov files so Adobes fix was to change the extensions to Mpg.

I'm also running an nvidia 335m graphics card which is supposed to boost performance .

From what i've read it either works perfectly or is really choppy on this computer. I don't do a lot of video but when i want to i would like the option to

iirc, premier will/can only use certain graphics cards for playback, make sure it is compatible.

you can try to reduce the playback resolution to half or quarter of original and see if that helps. i do that a lot when i'm doing effects and other things that require rendering, but i don't want to have to sit and wait to render every single edit. right click on the video, you'll see a 'playback resolution' and 'paused resolution,' go to the playback, and click 1/2 or 1/4, and that might help. it doesn't effect the actual video, just what it's being displayed at
