Can anyone recommend some links to look at for troubleshooting? Seems like I'm not getting power to the rear wheels either at all or it's spotty! 92 Passat Syncro. I assume I would start at checking the oil in the viscous coupler. Is there anything electronic?

no electronics. VC is probably worn out. good luck finding fluid, or re-filling it.

have you put it on a hoist and spun the passenger side front wheel with the car in gear?

Haha all you had to say is that it isn't servicable!

I haven't tried that. So get it on 4 jack stands and turn the wheel and the back ones should turn as well?

in theory it is serviceable (their life is only rated around 60 000miles).

the problem is that the VC fluid is so thick that its almost impossible to get out, you have to re-fill it to a very accurate level (84-86%), and the main supplier of the fluid doesnt produce it anymore.

finding a real-world solution is on my to-do list. I just havent had time.

So if they aren't serviceable, Was there a manufacturer of replacement ones? Or what's a guy to do?

    Burn it or go Haldex.

What is the specifications on the fluid? Mine works fine at the moment, but I'm just curious for the future as my Syncro has almost 600,000km on it.

German Transaxle of Bend, OR rebuilt 2 of mine awhile back. Still haven't installed them, so I can't comment on the quality of their work yet...
