Recently, in my 2000 Jetta GLS 2.0 AEG Manual, my 4th gear has been acting up. Every once in a while when I try to shift from 3rd to 4th it seems as if there is a wall blocking 4th and it wont go in so I have to push it into neutral and then into 4th and it slides right in smoothly. This never happens going from 5th down to 4th only up from 3rd to 4th. It also occasionally does this in 3rd gear as well. Every other gear works fine and my clutch appears normal as ever.

Could my synchros be on their way out? Further transmission issues?
Could old/low transmission fluid be causing this? Is there a way to check transmission fluid?
    Is it something clutch related?

    Any help is greatly appreciated

may be synchros going, definitely check your gear oil... There should be two plugs on the transmission, one is for filling and checking fluid level, the other is for draining. Open the higher one first, I believe it should be filled to that drain plug. There should be some type of DIY in the mkiv forum. Depending on how many miles on your car, it may be a good idea to change the gear oil. The only difference that I see in transmissions between 5 and 6 speed is the size of the hex drain bolts I believe yours is a 17mm. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4139917 This link should work.
