Thread: Dumbest thing you've heard at a gun shop/shooting range

  1. 03-26-2012 09:00 AM #1
I saw a guy not too long ago buying a Glock 22 at the local gun shop. With his purchase, he picked up a brick of .22LR. Upon finishing the sale, the guy then asks the clerk to please show him how to load his magazine with the .22LR. The clerk just looked at him in awe of all the stupid he had just been asked.

    Another time...

I took my dad to the shooting range once about a year ago and while we were there, some thugs came down to the shooting line. They had rented a giant revolver and were holding it gangsta style (sideways) and firing at a target about 3 yards away. BLAM BLAM BLAM!!! "Dat ***** dead! Dat ***** dead!!" is what they kept saying after emptying each cylinder. Funny thing was out of 6 shots, they only hit the target twice.
Dad and I moved to the other side of the range.

Lots of stuff...but I can't even start to think about listing it all. I generally despise local gun stores, and stay away from them as best as possible.

I really enjoy the gun prices more than the comical banter. Rusted, used AK-74 surplus which sells for about $400 (before the rust and use...) listed as "Rare, $990" ....really!?

Glock 22 and he bought 22lr ammo!?! I wouldn't be able to resist laughing in his face. How did he not see the .40 cal stamped on the side of the slide! Hell, how did the salesman not tell him Glock don't make a .22lr pistol. Only way to get .22lr Glock is with an aftermarket conversion kit.

I could tell he was a new gun owner from the goofy questions he was asking but I never thought he'd be so dim to not know what caliber his new gun fired. Middle aged white guy who was obviously from suburbia. Looked like he'd just finished playing 18 holes at the country club.

Well, it was a Glock 22. If he wanted a .40 cal he would have bought a Glock 40.

  6. 03-26-2012 07:01 PM #6
^This is actually pretty reasonable I think...

"Yo man, lemme get a Glock twenty-two..."

BUT, after seeing or handling it, the guy should have figured it out. After all, I hear a lot of "gangstas" say "Glock nine"...so...it stands to reason.

Dumbest thing? Gotta be the local outdoor "redneck" gun range by our house. Backwoods kind of place where all the local idiots go to shoot. So, I was out there shooting and noticed these younger guys and a nice hunting rifle. One of the guys goes over to a tree and hangs a 1/4" steel plate. They proceed to load the rifle with FMJ ammo. They were about 25 yards away from the steel plate. I realized what was about to happen and moved back to a safe distance. I watch in amazement as the bullets broke apart upon impact and ricochet back towards the guys. Two of them got hit by bits of copper jacket. Awesome. They were under the impression FMJ can go through plate steel. WRONG!!!

Not 1/4" steel that's for sure. I laugh every time my local shop strips a glock in a few seconds and lead the customer to believe that is one of a kind ability and what makes glocks so great. They try to push glocks on just about every new gun owner.

Man, I pretty much hate going into the local shops. I picked up my new Benelli Supernova today and couldn't wait to get out of there. Stupid little remarks, lame jokes, just down right asshattery. I don't know what it is but I can't stand it. There are four shops within driving distance to me and I can only stomach talking to two guys in the shops. TWO!

    I don't get it.

    1. Your gun shop guy is a piece of ish for selling someone a gun, without knowing anything about their abilities, I mean, the guy first off didnt know how to load his magazine, second didn't even know what caliber gun he just bought, eff that gun counter guy for making that sell....very dangerous.

I usually have things shipped to the LGS, so I go in, tell them what I'm their for, fill out my 4473 and pay them for the transfer.

if they have something I want, I usually get there before they open and wait out side, when they open I go in and get what I want and leave.

once I made the mistake of going in in the afternoon.. there was a guy there with a bushmaster he got from them complaining the gun didn't function.

he handed it to the guy on the other side of the counter who proceeded to check to see if it was empty.. thank god he did.. out it shat a live round.. pretty much every one had a bit of **** in their pants...

that was the dumbest thing I've seen at a gun shop.

I was at the range once... on a Federal facility with people being trained on the G17.

We were prepping for "duty carry" which entails loading your weapon, chambering a round and then putting the gun in your holster. Then you pop the mag and top it off; placing the mag back in your gun.

Well, this chick next to me prepped the weapon by holding it in her hand, dropping the magazine on the ground, bending over to pick it up, all the while putting the gun directly at me!!!

    That sure was fun...

A few weeks later at the OC spray area using sim guns I saw a chick from my class get sprayed with OC, freak out and then throw the gun on the ground and run away.

    High caliber folks here...

"I want a .50 caliber rifle for home defense"

Nope, not a pshop. It is a rare, but well documented piece of literature put out by HK quite a few years ago. That's what happens when you let the folks in marketing stage a firearms photoshoot, lol! I would love to buy a copy but they are very hard to find.

  19. 03-28-2012 10:22 PM #19
Yep, well documented --- that's why you'll always see HK owners take pictures of their guns with bullets in the magazine backward, a kind of secret HK handshake.

That being said, we did have a trainee do that at the range at our Academy - his picture went out to the entire patrol...

Oh no... I remember there was a picture of a Police Officer holding an assault rifle (probably an AR-15) with the magazine in backwards. Still trying to find it...

When I showed it to a buddy of mine, he said he's not surprised. People do some odd things under great stress

Damn muscle memory. That is why I have a fore grip in all my semi rifles (not like I have many ). I got so used to indexing on it I kept trying to go for it even in the ones that didn't have one.

Heard this one yesterday. A girl kept saying "I need a laser, I just need a laser". I really wanted to tell her she doesn't need a laser, she just needs practice.

"AKs are all inaccurate. You can't hit anything with them"

This was followed by me putting all 30 rounds, rapid fire, from my folding stock SAR-1 into a 10" square metal plate at 100 yards while standing. The guy pretty much shut up after that.

I was at the range and an ex fbi agent wanted to try out my ruger mkIII. She then proceeded to ask which way the magazine went in. Not to mention, I'd consider myself a beginner and I was shooting much better groups than her.

IMO, it's not the responsibility of the dealer to make sure people know the inner-workings of a firearm, they're in the business of sales. At best the salesperson should have mentioned the caliber in conversation ("What makes you consider a .40 caliber?"), and if the buyer showed a lack of knowledge, pointed them towards some literature or classes. Calling a buyer an idiot and telling them to shop elsewhere is a great way to lose revenue.

I haven't gone firearm shopping in a while but the most recent purchase at the local Big 5 was interesting. I was waiting around for the gun counter people and a young early 20-something couple walked in reeking of weed. They wandered into the store and just stared at the long-arms in a foggy gaze for a good 5-10 minutes (still no clerk), then left without saying a word. They were so high and aromatic that their smell lingered for the duration I was there checking out a shotgun. I got a strange look filling out the paperwork as the clerk saw me check the "no" box for the drug question. Had to explain that one to her

Yeah pretty much only the ones on TV shows are field agents. Real agents are google researchers for info on suspects.

    x2

I have a co-worker who says this basically every time the talk of guns comes up. The best part is that he does not and has not ever owned one. The only firearm he owns is an XD-9 subcompact that I sold him.

Same guy told me, "with the advances in ammunition there's really no reason to own a .45 when you could own a 9mm."
    oh herro.
