    Not sure if the the part number is just different for no reason but I found the part numbers for the carrier for mk5 r32 and 3.6 4motion passat to be different. Not allowing mk5 brakes aftermarket brake upgrades to be used on passat spindles.

    You don't think machining the mounting flanges down will affect the strength?
    The spindles should be finished machining tomorrow and the brakes fitted. Strength won't be a problem. I'm documenting everything as usual so that you guys can get through this smoother if you decide to do the same modifications.

    I believe he had skipped this step due to cost of parts. He was looking to utilize the hardware from a MKV R32 to complete the relocation.

    There's no way you'd need 000. Factory wiring is most likely 2 gauge, 0 at the very most. I'd guess 2. For the cost of relocating why not look at a lightweight option instead? You can get 12lb batteries with almost as much CCAs as your stocker that'll last years.

    Almost done with the machined Passat spindles...should be completed tomorrow....

    What are some companies that can offer the type of battery you mention? Stock battery CCAs is 850. Braille 15lb battery only has 426. Their 11.5lb battery has only 306.

    Go up to their 21.5lb battery and you are still only getting 550 CCAs.

    I'm doing this. Only 400 CCA but only 6.75lbs. Expensive as hell, maybe a little crazy, but I'm going to try it out. Living in CA so cold isn't too much of a concern.

    I hope you aren't serious in getting a $1,200 battery. That's just idiotic.

    I absolutely am. It's no more "idiotic" than many other mods that people here do. I'm not spending $1200 on a battery, more that I am spending $1200 to shed at least 30lbs from the car.

    Would you also call an RNS-515 upgrade idiotic? Or an air suspension? Or a set of $1800 coil overs? Or wheels that cost $500+ each? Who's to judge?

    lol! I would also answer yes to some of those, but that's my point. They are all things that many people here do. It's to be expected if you read these forums at all that you'll see this kind of thing. It all depends what you are after.

    Can you provide a link showing the stock battery is 850CCA? My battery looks to be labeled 640CCA.

    Why would you spend $1100 more over a EXT14 to save 5lbs?

    I will try to dig up where I found that info.

    That was why I said spending $1200 is idiotic. There are batteries just a couple pounds heavier for almost a thousand less.

    You are right though. 400cca isn't 640 or whatever the stock battery is. I'll be swapping the lightweight battery out when the winter tires go on each year.

    Time for some brake weight pron;

    I went with a Brembo kit for a number of reasons; quality, performance, pad availability, and product support. There are a number of kits available from Brembo that will fit the GolfR. There is a 6 piston/350mm disk, a 4 piston 355mm, and a 4 piston 365mm. The price and performance rating go down as the rotor size goes up(Yes, I know that sounds odd). Basically, the smaller rotors are denser and in some cases have more race oriented hardware.

    I chose the 355 kit for a number of reasons; wheel fitment(stock 18s will fit with 10mm spacers), pad selection(one of the most common pad outlines), ability to swap pads without removing the calipers, and the fact that I already had a bunch of pads here that I could use. If anyone needs help selecting the right kit for their car, just PM me, as I did a TON of research before making a decision. For those guys looking for the ultimate in weight savings, you can even consider downsizing to a 332 kit which will probably have more braking power than stock, weigh probably 20lbs less per corner, and will fit 17s.

    Anyway on to the Brembo weights;

    Total weight savings over stock per corner: 15.75lbs!

    Are you listening Gilligan?

    Remember though, any time you take weight out of the rotor, you have less mass to absorb heat, so there is a balance when choosing the size and type of rotor. Brembo offers many different rotor ring designs in terms of fin design, density, etc. so make sure you do your homework before upgrading your brakes!

    And here is why if you run Passat spindles, brake kits designed for the GTI/GolfR OEMspindles won't fit;

    The OEM spindles and thinner mounting bosses:

    The passat spindles are about 13mm thicker, which pulls the caliper too far inboard:

    In order for the Passat spindles to work, they must be machined properly. Thankfully I have access to everything needed to do this, so it did not become a fiasco.

    And before anyone says that this may be dangerous, take a look at the thickness of the TT spindle (shown earlier in this thread), where the caliper carrier mounts:

    The TT alu spindle has the same thickness as the OEM cast iron spindle.

    I will hopefully have the car on the road tomorrow....waiting on a new set of 18" Enkei PF01s to clear the brakes.

    I'm gonna pour one for the 17s that didn't make it on to my car

    the air ride is just a bad idea in a sport compact, a well engineered chassis beign cut to allow a ****ty bouncing air ride system to drop the car as low as possible and ruin the whole handling aspect of the car

    Interesting on spindle thickness. Would a Brembo kit designed for the Passat work without machining? Or is the geometry of the Passat different in some other way? (or are there just no kits for the Passat?)

    Also, forgive me if this is a stupid question, but it looks like the bosses and the calipers are separate parts, such that the calipers can be used with a variety of different bosses, correct? Could one just use a different boss?

    There are no Brembo kits for the vehicles utilizing the Passat spindle.

    When you say "bosses", are you referring to the caliper carriers? If so, yes, you could fabricate a caliper carrier with a different offset to accomodate the Passat spindle, but I am trying the machining route first, as it could be easier and just as effective.

    There is a company that makes an adapter already lets you run MB 350mm rotors and Porsche Boxster S calipers.

    Not sure if you know that or not.

    If you have the TT aluminum spindels then the Brembo kit will bolt right up if I'm understanding this correctly.

    OMG, cost/benefit of a LOT of things we do is questionable. Aside from pulling parts off the car, how many other part *swaps* can save you at least 30 lbs? About the only thing is wheels and they too cost $1500-$2000 for a good lightweight set. This isn't horribly different (yeah, I know this isn't unsprung/rotating mass we're talking about, but it's still 30lbs).

    This is true, though the aluminum hat should also be much better at wicking away the heat than an iron equivalent. Not saying its a wash, but the aluminum doesn't just weigh less, it's way better at heat dissipation than iron/steel which helps make up some for the lost mass.

    Buy an 11.5lb Deka battery and apply the $1100 savings to RB rotors that will shave 8lbs of rotating mass per side up front.

    Mike, you have a PM coming. Amazing research as usual!

    First of all VW doesn't rate their batteries in CCA they rate them in DIN. Unless they did this on 2012 cars but before that they never did that.

    I wanna try and help Mike keep this thread clear and straight and there is NO company currently making the above mentioned B6 adapters. Guys to keep and make an effective thread you've gotta have the info to back up the words links, pics or contacts everything else is just simply fluff and creates disappointment and confusion

    PM I received w/ again no answers just hollow words, like I don't know how to Google

    Only Google results come up w/ a one off set that were made but not put into any level of production.

    Sorry let me dig through my PMs I talked to the guy a while ago. So I hope his PM ares still in my box.

    http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=311344

    These brakes are the 312mm GTI rotors with the adapters and 986(non-s) calipers.

    I have been searching the photos of these brakes on the B6 passat but I think the thread or pictures in the thread have been deleted. I should have saved all the install pictures/thread as a PDF.

    You can goto the 330mm MB rotors with hub centric rings to keep everything balanced then run 986 Boxster-S calipers.

    I sent the guy that sells these an email about getting more information.

    Ill report back here when the guy send data back. Personally, Ill take 330mm 4 pot brake setup over 345mm 1 pot brake setup.

    One thing to think about is running a floating rotor setup if your going to run a fixed brake caliper. Its typically not a good idea to fixed rotor setup like most OEM companies do with a retrofitted fixed caliper setup.

    Just food for thought.
