What type of computer are you using? That will help with suggestions. If you have a movie, iMovie is pretty straight forward and easy to use for a beginner. And I hear Windows has Microsoft Movie Maker.

Personally I use Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects, but I also edit video professionally. So my needs are much different than yours.

If you let us know what you're trying to accomplish with your edits, again that would help with suggestions.

If you're going to make videos for your own personal enjoyment and sharing on YouTube, then I say go with the free options of iMovie or Microsoft Movie Maker.

If you want to pay for software and learn something a bit more straight forward than professional level stuff, I say buy a copy of Adobe Premiere. The latest version is almost professional grade.

Movie Maker is complete GARBAGE. It's no unnecessarily difficult to use even for the simplest of things. Plus it's not very powerful. But of course you already knew that.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas. I've found Vegas to be pretty easy to use but still a powerful editor. Although I do prefer the APP interface, but I think that's just because I have more experience with it.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is great. If you can grab an education license it's not to spendy

Otherwise Premiere Elements isn't to bad if you are looking for some decent tools to work on projects with.

Comes down to budget and how far you want to get into things
