I bought this a year ago. I put a new regulator in it, coil pack and new clutch and lightened flywheel. Also replaced all cooling plastics and some hoses at the front of the engine.
Car has some rust but not too terrible. May fix then sell.
Drives great and need to sell. Make me an offer.

I have a "like new" 1998 silver GTI VR6. It only has 57,000km on it and has no rust. $6000 would be too low for me so let me know how much you would be willing to pay.

98 gti VR6, 110,000 original kms. intake, header, exhaust, chip, lowered on springs/struts, 16" aftermarket wheels with kumhos, drivers edition wheels with goodyears...this car sat outside for a long time so the paint is weather beaten...has valid safety, no emission required this year... email zafar33 at bell.net if interested...

No offence, but I don't think you'll find a turn-key GTI at your price point. A 15 year old enthusiasts' car will have or had some issues at one time. You don't need to be a mechanic but a hands on attitude helps.
