I have noticed this area under my tranny since I got the vehicle. It looks to be some sort of tranny fluid leak...anyone else have any similar problem or can shed some light as to what it could be. I might just bring it into VW as its still under warrantee 2008 Jetta S 2.5L 5MT 38k miles.

Thanks a lot. Can't believe there's no solution. Just going to try and forget its there I guess... Thanks a lot for the link. Helped a lot.

if you want to fix it you have to pull the trans and split the case clean it and reseal it (using proper sealant)

You haven't happen to done it have you? Curious on the amount of work this would entail, or if at clutch change this would be pretty straight forward.
I took mine to the stealership - was told it is not a workmanship defect and not covered under warranty. VWOA says that they will cover any defect of workmanship including the transmission case (including seals) under the 5 yr / 60K power train warranty. It's just a matter of getting a dealership to go along with it being a defect. I'll be trying another dealer once its had a chance to accumulate a bit more.
Let us know if you have any success with the dealer.
It seems like this is pretty typical on these transmissions. IMHO, the dealer should fix this.

Its not only a VW problem. I've seen it on many different car from many different manufactures. Its a matter of the sealer they use for the case halves just doesn't hold up and start to weep. Only fix is to reseal but many car companies say this is normal and there is no fix. Problem is the only fix is removing the tranny, and doing a reseal of the case which if you go to a shop, and be a little expensive

i have done the repair myself its not bad it takes about 6-7 hrs to pull the trans and rip it apart i dont remember it taking any real special tools some cases are to porous but most are just a matter of using a proper sealant
and I am a vw tech and I have made this repair under warranty and no it wasn't on my car![]()
