NC license plate question?

Ok, so I was in Charlotte looking for A house and went to a job interview over the course of the 3 days of being in town. I happened to notice that some NC tags had red lettering and some had blue lettering. This kinda sounds stupid to ask but figured I might as well just ask. So why is that some are red, some ae blue? I'm moving to Charlotte in 3 weeks and will soon be getting NC tags, so I figured I might as well know...

Bored so i looked into it. All new plates have blue letters so my guess is prior to a recent year, plates had red letters. Now they have blue.

I've never seen a state let you use symbols on a custom one (@,&, ! etc.)

Thanks for the response.... That is odd, I haven't heard of symbols used either... I already have my plate picked out, hopefully no one has it. I have 3 that I'm gonna choose from, it's been 8 years since I have had personalized plates because here in Nevada it's EXPENSIVE!!

Blue letters were used for years when they decided to switch to red letters but the police complained that red was too difficult to read so was switched back to blue. Also letters up thru ZZZ were used up but rolled over to AAA since the first set of letters were never used. You can check NC DOT online if a specific plate is already taken. Coming from NV you may have too dark tint which you'll need to bring into compliance before the 1st yearly inspection (didn't need an inspection right away when brought a car from CA); there are yearly inspections but there's debate about modifying the schedule or eliminating altogether; shops want to keep inspections b/c they make good $$ from them.

Cool thanks for the heads up and thanks to everyone that has responded.... I just got my front windows lightened to 20%, I hope that is good enough. My back windows are still 5% tinted though. I debated on getting them lightened as well but really couldn't stand the thought so I think I'm going to leave it like I is for now and if something happens and I have to change it later on then I will take that next step. Hopefully they eliminate the inspections!!
