Well, it's all in the family!
I inherited my dad's old 87 Scirocco 16V that I've been trying to get back on the road. I noticed the other week the Beetle has a design element around the windows similar to my Scirocco: the chiseled section surrounding side windows. Of course there's no way to know if it really influenced the Beetle, but it is interesting:
I wouldn't say it was influenced by the scirocco, I've send that black treatment on lots of cars on the "B" pillar. Gtis, Vanagons and eurovans are three others that I can think of along with the previous new beetle. But I've seen it with other manufacturers as well. It's a design treatment to blend the pillar into the "green house" of the car to give it a true coupe appearance.
