Looks like they made the Recall some kind of Asian culture thing. There was also no noticable Mars clips with mutants. Hopefully the 3 boobed chick doesn't die this time if she's in it, lol.

After watching the trailer I had the same reaction that I had when I heard they were remaking it "What's the point?"

Looks fine, but that's the problem, it just looks fine.

  5. 04-02-2012 04:12 PM #5
Seems like the reaction across the board from everywhere I've read is...

Wait and see. No one seems to over the top hate it, but no one is totally in love with the casting either.

Hmmm, I see Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, Star Wars forest troopers & bits of Firefly mashed up in there. No Richter character (Michael Ironside) and none of Paul Verhoeven's excellent direction & wit either. OTOH, Colin Farrell has turned in some great work, Bill Nighy is cast as Kuato, production values look high, and the probable twist on the story could be good. The weak link IMO is director Len Wiseman. Verhoeven is a tough one to be compared to. Although I like the Underworld movies they are straight up action. It is a safe bet that this version of Total Recall will have none of the humor found in Verhoeven's other films such as Robocop & Starship Troopers. I'll go see this as a new film rather than a remake and will likely be, entertained.

Looks like a fun summer movie to me! Personally it's been so long since I've seen the original, I'm seeing this as a brand new movie. Which looks great with a the fun sci fi twist.

I thought the original Total Recall was pretty weak...but with Biel, and Beckinsale...I'll see this on female merit alone.

As much as I decry remakes, this actually looks good to me.

I love the trolls on IMDB, calling how every shot in the trailer copies movies like The Matrix, Blade Runner, Fifth Element, Star Wars, etc.

    idiots.

Obviously these film "buffs" have no idea that there are something like 7 different story themes, so duplication is highly likely.

And if it looks very similar to Minority Report and Blade Runner, look no further to the source material.

The original one simply has that "je ne sais quoi" feel to it which makes it a classic, but this updated version definitely "updates" the movie in terms of effects, stylization, and probably action. Hopefully we'll see Colin Farrel stay in Mars for "two weeks...two weeks!".

I do have to admit though, that Kate Beckinsale's role appears much more involved and kick ass than Sharon Stone's. The overall mood and ambiance of the 2012 version also seems more "Blade Runner" than the Verhoeven's futuristic look in the 1990 version.

I think I liked it. Will it match my love for the original? Probably not, but to say that this movie is unnecessary is a waste of keystrokes.

I like new takes on old ideas. That's what pretty much all movies since the dawn of time have been.

I will not see this movie if the three-titted chick is not in it though.

That was kind of what I thought. I mean, when I saw the orginal back in the day, I thought it was good. I look at it now and I just think it's an old cheesy "Ahnold" movie.

At the time, I didn't really think True Lies was that bad (sort of a comedic spy movie) and I never saw that particular Batman movie (did see the horrible pics of him as Freeze though ). I haven't seen True Lies since it came out - I may think it a total cheese fest now.

All I know is that Beckinsale or Biel, OR BOTH better take their shirt off and look like (o)(o)(o).

I saw Kate as Quaid's wife, then it turns out she wasn't, and they fought it out. There were a couple cuts otherwise out of that context but I'd say it's a reach to say she's "much more involved", but then again so is saying she isn't/following the original story.

It had semblances of darkness and retrofitted future tech, but then again, so did the 5th Element trailers.

I think this movie is more based of the original book "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale", and it's weird you guys say it has a little bit of blade runner because that movie too was based of a novel written by the same guy."Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,"

reading about the original total recall, there was a sequel in play but it died however the script was modified and "Minority report" was born from it, again written by the same guy.

I think it will be pretty good as a long as you can go into it with an open mind and not try to pick it apart trying to compare it the the Arnold version.
Any VWs made after 92 are usually only good for drive train donors.

The impression I'm getting, just based on the trailer, is that Beckinsale's role has been expanded to encompass that of her husband Richter as well. It looks like after her cover is blown she'll lead the search for Quaid and Melina for Cohaagen. If that's true, the "see you at the pahty" line will definitely be dropped - I don't see them showing a babe like Beckinsale losing her arms.

Looks fun. As much as I hate Farrell, I'll see it if only for Beckinsale and Biel.
