I know they got banned from flying to Europe in 2009 but now have bought all these new planes and hired new staff.

Garuda Indonesia is listed as a 4-star airline by Skytrax, and is also listed among Skytrax's Quality Approved Airlines.

In May 2010, the airline was named as the World's Most Improved Airline by Skytrax during 2010 World Airline Awards in Hamburg.

In 2012, Garuda Indonesia has been recognized as the Best International Airline among all major airlines throughout the world with 91 percent of the passengers very satisfied.

Wife got some crazy deals with them to fly Executive Class to Europe.

Should I fly with them or stay away?

I think the most improved airline award is probably apt. I think the dark days of the Yogyakarta flight 200 crash, and all but limited aircraft being banned from Europe and by CASA have spurred some pretty radical change.

I know they've got new aircraft like the 737-800 Next Gen (newer than Qantas) and A330-200s with high quality cabins, but the true question is pilot training and how that's been fixed and managed. I think you're probably quite safe these days, but you never know when your number is up..

Everyone in Perth called them Plummet Airlines

What would you be flying on to Europe and do you have to lay over in Jakarta or anything?

I don't trust anything to do with Indonesians.

Last time I was there, the dude took the families passports into a room for checking. Came back 2minutes and said there was a problem, but for $30USD he could fix it. Those people had bought the same VISA we had, twas clearly a scam.

Such pervasive corruptions must surely be as evident within their aviation industry.

I wouldn't trust em, but the chance of anything happenning is still minisucle. Probably safer then driving in sydney.

its Sydney - Jakarta - Dubai - Amsterdam

Executive Class for $8K for 4 of us!

My wifes in the aviation industry and all her colleagues are raving on about them how they have beds in Executive class and the planes are new and service is top notch.

They reckon they are the best and have travelled with them numerous time.

But again i cant get over the Indo corruption thing then again i have flown Olympic plenty of times and have managed to survive even with their propellor planes

Their Aviation industry?? How about their ENTIRE SOCIETY haha. It's just how things get done there. And in Malaysia. And in India. And...

Anyway. It's the pilot training that you have to question - you only need money to buy new planes, and not much else. I think you would be OK though. Just don't make a habit of it

    Let's not forget the Filipinos.
Costa. It's hard enough doing one stopover in a sh1tty country. You really wanna do two? And how long in between?
Unless the stopover is in a decent country and they're flexible enough to allow you to stay for a day or two, stopovers are fvcking crap.

Yeah. Make the Jakarta stop over a few days, but just fly here instead of staying in that toilet of a city :p

I'd rather fly Etihad or Emirates where most pilots are either British or Aussies, so none of that "pride" nonsense.

Dubai airport, where the heaving pits of humanity come to lay on floor for > 12 hours whilst transitting. Made the mistake of flying them a couple of times in economy. Never again.

I jumped at cheap tickets once to the US to save money like a mong.

I got stranded in F*cking SAMOA for a day in the piss hot middle of summer sitting in what could loosely be called an airport lounge/grass hut thusly -

There were no singers nor dancers.

    I didn't rate it.

The main question is though, did you meet Antoine Roccamora ?

True it is prolly the most corrupted country in the world, but that's how is life overthere... it all depends on your networking.

I have flown with them for the last three years to go back home, before that I always use SIA. I rate them much better than Qantas for sure... and slightly less than SIA (without saying SIA is dearer than Garuda).

Andre comes on just to defend his country! Is SIA still that good? Haven't flown them for a good 5-6 years, but about to next month to go see Timmeh and Jamil.

Do it. I think you'll be OK. Though why aren't you flying KLM? Get some more porcelain houses! (I gave one to my mum and she loved the story behind it)

Of course it's still that good. I live in SIA planes. They're the best! A lot of the planes even have auxiliary/iPod in, so you can bring your own videos and watch them on the big screen in the seat. It's the best!

I'm damn sure they have a get them drunk policy going on. Never get as drunk on any other flights as I do on QF business.

err - we're having an adult discussion about International Airlines that are actually good and safe to fly on. Why would I mention them?

Thats why I love QF's. Sitting in First, they even sneak you a few screwdrivers pre-flight even though its against regs.
By the time you're over Alice Springs you're sh!t faced and don't wake up til HK. Mind you I've taken about 2 sleeping pills by then. Its a surprise I haven't had an 'episode' tbh.

Really? First thing they did for us on Etihad was get us a drink. You could probably be on your second drink, if you were keen, before take-off.
