Obd-1 evap purge regulator valve : Black or blue?

Hey, how's everyone doing?

I have always wondered about and have been confused by some of the info in the bentley regarding the n-80 charcoal canister purge valve.

The Bentley talks about two possible purge valves being utilized through 1996, a blue and a black one, normally open or normally closed at rest being the difference. (So, big difference.) They never really specify or I didn't figure out how to determine which vehicles are using which valves. The schematics for all MK3 years just list it as n80 and all srawn the same way...

My car is a 1995 gti vr6, the evap system consists of a charcoal canister that has a drain at the bottom, and a line going to the fuel tank gravity valve, and a line going to the purge valve. There is no original LDP or vent solenoid like on later cars. My car has a black n-80 valve on it and I'm starting to think that it needs a blue one. I am having trouble finding a part reference for the blue one, it seems that most parts houses only have the black one and list it as compatible for models that I would not expect, or I'm not looking properly.

Anyone have the P/N for that blue valve?

Also, my car is originally from California, so originally specced with a 258 CR ecu, and I suppose a black purge valve, as that what was installed when I bought it from the PO. Since then I have gone turbo and using C2 software has you switch to a BM or EA ecu, and I'm wondering if cars running those originally, or any obd-1 coilpack vrs other than cali cars would have the blue valve. Anyone want to check in with what is on their obd-1 coilpack vr6 car?

hey Mike - I have the blue one ('93 Corrado OBDI vr6 [T] coil pack setup). I'll be wrenching this evening, so will make sure I post up its P/N....

Just looked at mine. The P/N for the rubber ring reads 054133459B, but I couldn't find a # on the blue solenoid itself. I then tried to find a diagram online, and wound up here:

So, it appears that the P/N for the blue piece is 058133517.

Ok, I just looked at my valve, it's a Bosch valve, black in color, there are two part #'s, one is 0280142300, the other is 058133517, which matches the one in your link....mine operates normally closed with no voltage, and opens with voltage during the output test....

Maybe the info in the bentley is incorrect, it says that the blue valve is normally open and used through 1996, and black valve is normally closed and used from 96 onwards?

On mine, the rubber bracket ring slides down and there's the valve P/N under it on the valve itself. (I posted mine above) I had to shoot it with some silicone spray to get it to move off and on easily. Can you guys post your part numbers off of the blue valve in the car?

I looked up my ecu #, I have a 021 906 258 BM, and I 'm using the C2 v. 406071 just for reference...

Also, I have the arrow on the valve facing towards the intake manifold and a check valve between the evap valve and intake manifold to prevent boost from escaping, and the valves and tubing function and are not clogged, sticky, leaky, collapsing or anything like that.

Arrow towards intake manifold, most definitely normally closed.

I dont think they would make any of them normally open. With it "off" it would fill the intake with fuel vapor. The charcoal canister is there to deal with the vapor in that situation.

Very interesting though that I have a different part number.....so just to clarify, your blue valves are closed at rest with no voltage going to them when you say normally closed? It would not be logical to have a normally open valve and have to keep feeding voltage to it to keep it closed where it would be most of the time so that is why I want to clarify what I'm reading in the bentley and the info that we find out....

Yes, normally closed = no flow with no voltage.

Thanks Paul and Paul, just wanted to confirm that I have a properly matched valve/ecu combo....my part number is only slightly different and it is black so maybe it was a replacement part sourced from a different v.a.g. vehicle or something...

What is interestingnis that in the 12v self study that valve is listed as normally open as well. Must have been a running change at some point but its definitely pre obd2 change.
