Thread: back yard jetta build (masdubate)

    1. 04-28-2012 11:32 PM #106
Did you do anything to reinforce the frame rails after cutting out the structural pinch weld?

Why didn't you cover up the subframe, steering column, and take out your suspension? It would have taken another half an hour. I just hate seeing people spend all this time to make their bay "nice", yet take so many shortcuts. It's the little things like that that stick out and just ruin it.

You're making good progress though, keep it up.

I put a really hot weld down both sides then jumped on the frame rails and they did not crack so I think it's good

You didn't tell us you were a structural engineer! Is there an equation to determine the number of jumps you perform in relation to the "heat" of the weld you put down?

But really, that was an awful idea, you should probably start looking for a new shell.

I'm ok with your project except for that. You jumped on the frame to decide if it was strong enough? What about the load of the motor? Or the load of the motor and suspension as the car bounces up and down on a bumpy road...or WHENEVER?

    10. 04-30-2012 01:09 PM #115
I'll say it did, minus the overspray on the subframe.

I think everyone should consider this is a back yard build. Taking this into consideration its 10x better than most the crap builds on here. OP great job for working with what you have

      pretty good

but I still wouldve taken the subrframe and the horn off atleast, but hey you pulled the engine

    13. 04-30-2012 01:44 PM #118
Considering that a typical build thread now is coils, wheels, and 7 pages of jacking off, this is actually pretty good.

That's a little extreme, but fairly typical.

Come on. Give the guy some credit. That looks amazing for the conditions he is working under. Also pay attention to the time frame he did it in. Pretty ****in crafty if ya ask me.

This is turning out awesome considering it was swiss cheese, when My wife owned it we got flooded in that car after a nasty rain fall few years ago, we were literaly sitting in water and how that car still ran for a few months is beyond me

I think it will be ok I was looking at my gfs car today there is only one spot weld every 6 inches or so that hold that pinch weld together so I think a solid weld will hold up fine
