    Glad bicyclist wasn't seriously hurt.
Kudos to bus driver for actually watching his mirrors.

...I just wish we could do something about the huge discrepancy between the motorized vehicles and the bicycles.
The teen in the car obviously didn't or possibly couldn't see the bicycle in front of the other car.
So he/she thought it was just some old guy barely moving on the road.
He/she goes to pass it and then swerve over to the right lane to pass the bus and hits the bicyclist.
Fortunately he doesn't literally run over the guy, just his bicycle.
The driver did not see the bicyclist until it was too late and thus did not intend to hit him.
But driving off was a big mistake... if you get caught.

But more importantly- the Accord was designed under Euro pedestrian crash safety standards.
So the round front with the collapsible hood really helped.
(and he was probably on an adrenaline rush after the crash.. he will be sore later)

Good thing it wasn't a GTR....

And here is where I possibly piss off the cyclists.

If you want to own a lane in traffic going 5 mph max, then you really need some type of lighting system to make yourself easier to see.
With LED lights and battery tech now, that shouldn't be too hard to do.
And I know... bicyclists hate any type of safety restriction aimed at how they ride.
But I feel for the stupid teen driver in the video (before he drove off).
I could have easily made that same mistake in an urban area.

Turn in your license if you need lights to see what's in front of you in broad daylight.

Going well slower than the prevailing traffic is an accident waiting to happen. If this kid didn't hit the guy on the bicycle, someone else would have sooner or later.

In a world of big vehicles and people thinking DRLs are required for safety: Is it that hard to fathom that a narrow dark bicyclist might be really hard to see for the average driver?
At least motorcycles have some exhaust noise and are moving with the speed of traffic.
If a guy was just running down the road in a lane and got hit, most would say "Well no duh. It was going to happen." But bicyclists are about as hard to see as a single guy running, and usually moving about that speed.

I just think if you are going to give bicyclists the same rights as motorized vehicles, there needs to be some regulations to make them more visible since they are inevitably going to be moving at a dangerously slow speed compared to normal traffic.

The bicyclist is an idiot too for riding near the middle at times. Appears to have been hit near the right side but still. I see a perfectly good pedestrian bridge...

Illegal to ride on the sidewalk or pedestrian bridge.
But he could have gotten off and walked the bicycle... but then again, he has the right to do as he pleases in traffic.

Some of you guys need to watch the video again The end of the video states that bicycles can take up an entire lane on the bridge if they choose to. Pause at 0:25 and you can see the Bus, followed by the silver Passat, and the black Accord all in the right lane. At 0:28, the driver of the black Accord suddenly decides he is an impatient douche and jumps out in the left lane and fails to use his turn signals. He then speeds past the Passat and cuts in front of him no doubt failing to use turn signals once again and finally at 0:30 he slams into the bicyclists while speeding. Pay close attention to the clock in the video itself.

like someone else mentioned, this is in broad daylight. if you can't see something that is directly in front of you, or even to the side of you, then you really need to have your license revoked. it's a very basic driving maneuver.

that said, bicyclists do usually have gear on that make them visible more visible (ie. flashing lights). but i really doubt it would make much of a difference during the daytime. imagine if this were a motorcyclist. some motorcycles do have drl's, but only on their headlamps. yet you see people rear-ending motorcycles all the time. i really do believe this is less a matter of bikes/motorcycles not being visible, and people just being poor drivers.

    Oh.. good call.
I was thinking he bicyclists was in front of the Passat.
But the video has a chunk of time missing in the middle.

The bus must have changed lanes to go around the slow moving bicyclists just as the Accord diver come up in the left lane to pass the bus.. the bus might have even contributed to the Accord driver not seeing the bicyclists.

On that note- why is that important chunk of video not in the youtube video?

Because it forces drivers who are actually paying attention to pass properly instead of sharing a lane that is too narrow to safely share.

Bicycles don't get rear-ended often, they get side-swiped.

In this thread: TCL proves how little they know about bicycle safety. It isn't common sense if you just drive a car.

Unless you want the cyclists on the pedestrian sidewalk (illegal and over the concrete wall) or in the river below...where else are you gonna put them?

Even if he was on the side that Accord woulda just side swiped the hellz outta him.

Bicycles don't get rear-ended often, they get side-swiped.

In this thread: TCL proves how little they know about bicycle safety. It isn't common sense if you just drive a car.
Don't you think it odd that at the same time we are making cars more idiot proof that we are giving bicyclists more rights on the road?
