Time to spark some fun discussion in this forum.... I hope.

Has anyone ever looked at putting a 5-cylinder engine from a Eurovan (Transporter T4 for our non-North America friends) into an Audi 4000? Looking at the basic engine specs, it looks kind of like a stroked-out version of the 2.23L. Makes slightly less HP but a good deal more torque.

Here are the numbers I've come up with:

    2.23L JT:
    bore x stroke: 81.0 by 86.4 millimetres
    115 hp @ 5500 RPM
    126 ft lb @ 3000 RPM

    2.5L AAF:
    bore x stroke: 81.0 by 95.5 millimetres
    108 bhp @ 4,500
    140 lbf·ft @ 2,200

(There was a later, slightly uprated version of the 2.5 but I don't know whether the differences were in actual engine design, or in the management. Also, it would be hard to get in the states.)

So yeah, those are interesting numbers to me. I assume that by playing around with camshafts (which I assume are the same configuration as the 2.23L) and timing, you could retune the 2.5L to have a power curve more like the 2.23L, but higher. I also wonder how interchangeable the cylinder heads are (since I might be having big valves put in my 2.23L), or even if you could put a 20v head on the 2.5L!

Seems like there's potential for a lot of cool stuff. So... anyone know whether any of this would work? Discuss!!

Yes, it would definitely work. The 2.5 stroker is a popular build. Not quite as much as a 10vt, but there are quite a few out there. You can do all sorts of things with them...pure stroker, homemade 20v turbo, et cetera. Heads are all more or less interchangeable.

The cam is where the 2.5 gets its torque, so you may lose that if you swap it out or change heads, though it definitely has the potential for more horsepower.

there's a lot of hassle to fit the tall block 2.5 in a longitutinal mount arrangement as there are holes in the block casting not machined or tapped for bolts.

For that amount of power, you can easily bolt in an NF engine from an 87' 5000 quattro. It has to be naturally aspirated, and engine code NF. 130 @ 5500 RPM ,140 ft. lbs.@ 4000 RPM. On top of that you can put a 272degree cam in for some added grunt.

Cool! Thanks for all the good info. It's something I may or may not consider if I ever happen upon a 2.5 for cheap... I guess I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it.
