The pulley itself is different from what I understand. I'm not well-enough versed in the various Mk2's and their options to say which is which, however.

Ok so when I got my mk2 it had the wrong alternator, the pulley was sitting about an inch toward the drivers side of the car making the belt ride crooked. Is there a difference between the way the 65 amp alternator and the 90 amp alternator mount or sit?

Not sure of all the options, but I replaced my 65 apm with a 90 and it just dropped into place and everything lined up.
From what I was told the 90 amp / 65 amp thing is a AC /non ac thing.
I think the problem you are talking about is a 16 valve alt and an 8 valve engine. Not completely positive, but that might give you something to look at.
If you can get a part number off the alt itself, try googling it and see what comes up.

Most people run 90A especially if you have A/C. When I was ordering my replacement alternator, at least in diesel models the 65A will have a longer pulley (as its meant for non A/C cars and to be mounted lower) and the 90A will have a short pulley. The mounting point that the large bolt doesn't go through is also in a slightly different location. I don't know if this info pertains to alternators for gassers but that's what I've found on my diesel. Installing a 90A alternator in place of a 65A in a Non-AC car may not fit properly and require grinding the casing of the alternator. Again this is with the diesels assuming it would be the same with an 8V

There are different length pulleys. Look at how many different configurations belt setups there has been depending on what stuff is on your motor such if you are running a/c and p/s.

Yeah I measured what I need to take off the alternator, I'm going to go ahead and make it work. My car seems to have ac due to the lines coming out of the firewall.... but no pump

Do you have a picture of how it is mounted and the way the pulley and alt are off.
