I have a 1985 scirocco 8v that needs a brake booster. Not sure if a 16v booster will work... but if someone knows and it does, I need one!

Shipped to 55105. Reply to this thread or pm me.

    Thanks!

the 16V booster will not work as the plunger is not the same lenght you will need to change the master to go with

    Are you sure about that?

The PO owner of my '83 Rabbit GTI installed a 22mm M/cyl by adjusting the pushrod.

Is the 8V Scirocco pushrod fixed, or something?

The 20mm M/cyl, that the 8V comes with looks identical to the 22mm 16V M/cyl, other than the 22mm stamp.

I have a recently rebuilt A1 Cardone 22mm M/cyl with a 16V brake booster, IM me if interested.

Go to a site like Rockauto or Autohausaz and do a little research. Part numbers tell the story.

I couldn't stand it. Went to vagcat.com and found the part # for a 1985 Scirocco brake booster. Then I searched that part #. Here are the results:

This all looks pretty (stupidly) complicated. whats the difference in a 22mm master cylinder and a 20mm? is that diameter?

I think for now, I am going to hit up a junkyard and grab a mk3 and weld the pushrod.

I don't think you'll have to... It might also be adjustable, have you looked at the top of the brake pedal?

The mk3 boosters have a ball on the end of the rod that mounts to the brake pedal. The mk2 pushrod from the brake pedal is threaded.

No reason for this to be complicated. First 22mm or 20mm refers to the diameter of the piston which pushes brake fruid out of the master cyinder into the brake lines to operate the brakes. The ONLY reason to change out a 20mm for a 22mm master cylinder is if you are adding rear disk brakes or Girling 60 front brake calipers. Rear disks require more volume of fluid to operate than drum brake wheel cylinders. Likewise, dual piston Girling 60's require more fluid than single piston Girling 54's. The formula for the volume of a cylinder is pi times radius squared times length. Radius squared for the 22mm is 121. For the 20mm it is 100. Thus the 22mm is 21% larger than the 20mm. To move the same volume of fluid with a 20mm the piston would have to travel 21% farther than the 22mm. People add the larger master cylinder so that they don't have to put up with longer travel of the brake pedal. So, if you're upgrading your brakes to ones which require more volume of fluid to operate also upgrade to a larger diameter master cylinder. Otherwise, don't bother. There is no other advantage.

The boster is another issue all together. Is your booster broken? If so replace it with any one off the list that I already posted. They ALL have the same part # and are thus the same. If it's not broken, leave it alone. There's no advantage of using one over the other.

Finally, don't do everything you see done on this site. Welding that pushrod is one of the don't. Wouldn't you feel stupid(not to mention possibly dead) if you hit your brakes really hard in an emergency and the weld broke? If the shaft diameters were the same size and you carefully cut new threads, I guess you could retrofit the earlier link but why bother with so many donor cars of ones which fit?

You do not know what you're talking about. Go to http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,1884 . I searched 1975 Scirocco, 1987 Scirocco 16V and 1987 Cabriolet. All yield the same Cardone part # 535710.

They want $170 plus shipping for it including the core. I'll sell you one from a 95K 16V Scirocco for half of that, $85 plus shipping. 22mm Master cylinder will fit this. Put one on my '87 Cabby when I did rear disks.

Like Suburbangeorges told don't change for a 22mm if you are not upgrading to rear disk brake. The adjustment on the rod at the brake pedal will not do it if you are using a 22mm master on a regular 8V booster. The master as to match the booster. If you put side by side a 22mm master and a 20mm master, there will be a difference of almost an inch. The plunger inside the brake booster is then shorter of an inch in the 22mm booster compare to the 20mm to match the inch longer of the 22mm master. Just did the modification on my Scirocco 83 because I just changed the rear axle for a disk brake version of a 16 valve Scirocco. Also do not use the MK3 brake booster by cutting and soldering as this is dangerous mod like previously mention.

If know it's in french but if you have an account on Vwquebec.ca and you go to this page you will find pictures that show you all. This is my restoration post: http://www.vwquebec.ca/forum/showthr...1-8l-8V/page20

Sorry to tell you that I do know what I'm talking about. Cardone is not a reference. They show different 100 mm size axle under the same part number for Scirocco. I could be wrong but my research and my experience showed me the opposite.
According to ETKA which is the reference, the 1986 Scirocco 16V (533 611 019) master is different from the 8V (191 611 019 or 1H1 611 019 C) as they have different part number. I also just did the mod on my Scirocco 1983 by upgrading to rear disk brake. Also for 1986 ETKA show at least 4 differents part number for the booster.

Also the part number 172612107C that you search for is for the right hand drive in europe not the left hand drive in north america. Also this is a 8" in diameter and the north american is a 9".

You can also have a look on this website that tell you what need to be change for a rear disk upgrade on a MK1: http://www.selendesigntech.com/xRearBrakes.aspx

I doubt Volkswagen would put different pedal clusters in Scirocco 2 '85+, for 8V and 16V...

The pedal cluster is the same it's the plunger inside the booster that do not have the same length. The adjustable rod that connect to the pedal cluster is the same also. They were 2 different manufacturers, one for the 8V and one for the 16V (ATE) booster and master. See the following pictures from my upgrade on my Scirocco 1983. Both boosters were disassemble from the car at the time of the picture to make sure the everything was the same except for the length of the plunger. You can also see the difference in the length of the master where they connect to the booster.

    - 16V ATE master from a Scirocco 1988 on the left compare to a 8V master from a Scirocco 1983 on the right.

    - Close picture of the 1983 booster were you see the plunger is flush with the outside of the booster.

    http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/v...ster_83_8V.jpg

-Close picture of the 1986 ATE booster were you see the plunger is almost a 1" recess inside with the outside of the booster. See the ATE logo at the bottom center.

You are correct that in my haste I copied the rhd boster part # to search. My ETKA shows three lhd 9" boosters 171612107G, 155612107 and 155612107A. I assume that they are coresponding to different OEM suppliers. But if you do what I did and search the part # you get the following:

The other two only go back to 1984(maybe there was only one supplier earlier)

This conversation keeps getting mixed up between master cylinders and boosters.

"According to ETKA which is the reference, the 1986 Scirocco 16V (533 611 019) master is different from the 8V (191 611 019 or 1H1 611 019 C) as they have different part number"

    Of course they have different part #s. One's a 20mm and one's a 22mm(16V Scirocco).

This is only anecdotal evidence but when I added 10.1" brakes to my '87 Cabriolet(8V of course), I replaced my 20mm MC with a 22mm and it functioned perfectly.

He does not need a new booster unless his is broken
Classified forum rules require that you post a price. If you don't know what to ask, they suggest that you search past FS threads.

So, when your item sells, please don't edit out your price and description when you mark it "SOLD". Rather, edit to show selling price.

I never put my 100% confidence in after market cross reference I've been there to many time returning parts that don't fit even if the website or the book were telling they do. I've also look at severals sites showing what needs to be done to upgrade an MK1 to rear disk brake and they always say to match the master to the booster as they are different depending of the year. Just to make sure he only as to measure the distance between the plunger and the outside of the brake booster. If they are almost flush he needs to upgrade if he wants to go to rear disk brake. If it's mostly close to an 1" he can keep is booster and do the upgrade or keep what he as. Does he have 2 separates proportionning valves in diagonal or the single proportionning valve under the master? My 1983 had the single proportionning under and that's why I had to change to the newer version of the booster to match the 22mm master. My Scirocco are Canadian version and could be different from the US version. According to my auto parts supplier from 1980 until 1983 they had the single proportionning valve under the master. In 1984 they add both available depending of the date code this means he as to verify if he owns a 1984 or older. If it's an 1985 or newer they are both the same booster for the 16V and the 8V.
I second you that he does not need a new booster unless his is broken.

I am still looking for a brake booster.

I finally pulled mine and found that it is F.A.G. manufactured and the part number is 155 612 105. I called the local VW dealership and they told me a booster from an 84-89 scirocco or from an 84-93 cabriolet would fit. The booster I took off looks like its a 16v booster.

If anyone has a booster of the same part number or from one of those models for around 60 bucks I'd love to buy it.
Do it once, do it right.
