    Thread: Grinding gears

    1. 04-09-2012 11:50 AM #1
      Hello all!

So I've driven a manual trans for most of my life.... MKI GTI, MKII GTI, various trucks and now my MKVI GTI.

I've never had a problem shifting in the past, but I sure do seem to grind geers a lot in this car. There are times when I shake my head at myself wondering what the heck I'm doing. Mostly during upshifts... And seems like 2nd to 3rd.

I know this car gets a few complaints for the long clutch travel and admittedly I'm not the tallest dude on the planet - but even when I move the seat up a few notches I still tend to grind a bit.

I'd hate to go to VW service and tell them I have a problem grinding gears because I know the look I'd get, but with my manual trans experience and never really having a problem in the past, I just can't help but wonder if there isn't an issue here.

      Any input? Appreciate it!

Are you depressing the clutch all the way? Did you test drive the car before purchasing?

My wife is 5'3" and she could not engage the clutch fully, so she has an auto.

Test drove before I purchased and rolled 24,000 miles on the way to work today. Car has been flawless.

I always go to the floor with the clutch and it still seems like I get a grind or two during a daily drive.

I'm 5'7" as well - If i was a noob, I'd totally chalk it up to driver error. But like I said I've always been in manual trans cars, always had dirtbikes/sportbikes, spent a lot of time on tractors with clutches etc... Just seems odd to me that I'm having this problem now.

Depends if you are trying to shift very quickly or not. If you are really slamming through the gears there have been complaints from a few people. I remember reading a post by Halvie saying this is the only car he had trouble getting into third. I myself have an issue every once and a while if really trying to hammer through them.

I sometimes buzz the gears going into 4th, but it generally amounts to not quite getting into gear before I start letting out the clutch. I keep reminding myself to delay a tad with the clutch in.

Happens to me about once a week, almost always from 2nd to 3rd. Never had an issue in any other car.

I have trouble getting the shifter into third on occasion, but that is a shifter mechanism issue I believe with mine.

I've had manual transmissions all my life until i started looking for a used GTI early last year. I'm 5'7" and the clutch travel in my MKIV Jetta GLI was perfectly fine. But when I jumped into a few MKV GTI's to test drive, I found the clutch travel quite uncomfortable. I wasn't grinding gears, but the seat position I needed to be in was too close to the steering wheel. So I ended up purchasing a 2007 with DSG. The same happened a couple months ago when I went hunting for my MKVI. I was hoping the clutch travel had changed, but it didn't. So again I got a DSG.

Thanks to VW for getting the dual clutch into the GTI's. If they had went with a regular automatic, I would never have bought one.
      Current - MKVI GTI
Past - MKV GTI, MKIV GLI, MKIV Jetta Wolfsburg, MKIII Jetta Trek, MKII GLI, MKI GTI

Yup you've got to sit NASCAR style for sure. Like I said my wife can not physically operate the clutch pedal.

Unless you're extremely short, you shouldn't have an issue depressing the clutch all the way.

Not going to transform this into a DSG vs. 6 speed argument.
