Destination Ideas

Greetings all. The wife and I are looking for some ideas on easy, close destinations for a short holiday post-Christmas / pre-new year vacation sans kids (hurray for baby-sitting grandparents). We will be flying out of Houston, so central America / Caribbean is nice and easy. This is for us to relax and enjoy some time together without the kids, and not run around like crazy headless chickens to see everything.

Like to have:

• beach to chill on
• pool
• water activities: snokel, diving, fishing, kayaking
• eco-tourist stuff a plus
• moderate restaraunt and night life options

Considering:

• Roatan / Utila, Honduras
• Costa Rica
• Aruba
• Curacao
• Others?

Wife won't even consider anywhere in Mexico.

A lot depends on your budget. Example: my wife and I have been to both Aruba and Costa Rica, 7 days each and one trip was 2X+ more than the other and we had the exact same great time. Hve fun!

Sadly we won't be able to get away for 7 days, 3-4 max. After that we will start to wear out the free babysitting service (at this point will be 13 months and 2.5 yrs).

What did you think of Costa Rica, and where did you go? That's high on our list.

For the Costa Rica trip back in '09...I took my family plus my mom and brothers and rented an 4BR oceanview/mountainside house with a large pool/deck via VRBO. We rented 2 jeeps and basically hung out at the beach, the house and toured a couple of towns. The house rental was $800 for 6 nights. It came with daily maid service too...
