the Westy will likely still have them attached and if I recall correctly you cannot remove them without invariably eliminating the ability to mount wheels back on as the drum brakes are all held together by the axle nut.
Put the 81 on the two dolly in neutral and the westy on the trailer.

taking the long and difficult plunge into campervan restoration. I have agreed to purchase a 1981 vanagon gl? in nice shape, but currently not running. Also, is a 1983 Vanagon Westfalia. I have a flatbed trailer to tow the gl, but the trailer has an attachment to pull a second vehicle like a dolly.
the Westy has no transmission (well...to be fair, its inside on the floor...but that doesn't count), so can I tow it like a dolly? The truck I'm using to pull is a chevy 3500 diesel, so I'm not worried about the weight. I just want to know if there is anything I have to watch out for towing the westy off the back of the trailer (only the steering axle on the trailer, drive wheels on the ground, no tranny in the van)
it would save me 3 hours to move both in one trip...so it sure would be nice to do it that way.

The westy has stub axles that connect the drum and the cv joint.
You do not need the cv joint installed at all during towing.
