Johnson 50 question

Johnson 50hp engines, like the one on the Mohawk...should they pump water our the exhaust ports that are right below the power-head all the time? Or is there a thermostat that needs to open? Reason I'm asking is that we ran her with muffs on the trailer and it wasn't pumping water. The broker wasn't sure if it just needed to warm up, if there was a problem with the muffs, or whether it might need an impeller. Also, any idea how hard it is to replace the impellor and reseal the lower unit?

I'm a merc guy, but I would bet johnnyrudes have a telltale (p stream).

If you're not 100% on the timeframe of last impeller change...change it before running it again.

It's a simple process and I bet there are youtube vids for that engine. Plus you get to r&r the lower unit lube.

Probably needs an impeller. mode12 is right, they have a pisser that should be spitting out a healthy stream of water anytime they are in water or being flushed.

Dropping the lower unit is pretty easy, as long as everything isn't corroded. Good luck!

Definitely replace the impeller. That should be shooting water any time it is running. Not too difficult as long as the bolts aren't corroded.If they are use a little heat on them and they will come right out.

Nope, not melted. Actually running OK, just starting shopping knowing it's old.
