Engine oil flushes

Awhile back I was listening to 'Car Talk', a caller asked about an engine flush using diesel fuel that his dad used to do. He'd fill the engine with diesel fuel and let it idle a bit then drain and refill with motor oil. The drained diesel fuel was said tonother be filthy.
Has any one heard of this or actually done it?
Are motor flushes worthy the cost or another rip-off scheme?
