Thread: Audi A4 1.8T OEM Catalytic Converter !

    1. 04-10-2012 11:24 PM #1
      Hello, I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T, Automatic, Frontrak
Since I have owned the car, the catalytic converter has been changed 3 times since Jan '12
I drive the car for awhile, and get the pesky code: 0420.
Changed the o2 sensors as well. I have been getting them changed with after markets cats.
I was told that after-market and Audi dont mix.
Now, I have no choice but to buy the original OEM cat converter that's over $1000 at the dealer.
However, just wondering, Audi too gets their parts from another source, so who makes their cats??
I want to save some money and buy directly from the main company that Audi sub contracts.
      Any info??

I can't answer your question directly but....
Have you ever used Techtonics Catalytic Convertor? ( I got my new fo 300.00 from germanautoparts.com)

Also, are you clogging your cats or burning them out?

I don't really know, I bought my car and within minutes the DAMN engine light comes with the 0420 code.
After the 3rd replacement , got it replaced with 'Ultrafit' Catalytic converter.
I am sick and tired and totally hate the engine light.
The car kinda runs rough too, slow pick up but when it gets going its fine.
I was told a used OEM catalytic converter is better than a new aftermarket one.
I found this on the web, but man is it expensive:

      a question for you:

      1) do you have a BOV or DV venting to atmosphere?

if you have answered no, my suggestion is to get on the vibrant performance website and look into this:

My dad's car had the same problem after his OEM cat went out. This installed on the 2nd O2 sensor port just before the O2 sensor (furthest away from the turbo) fixed the problem for me. It was a $25 fix.

      Hope this helps!

You know there is a 7 year federal warranty on the cat, right? If the cat fails during the emissions system warranty, Audi replaces the cat for free.

Its a 2003 and your 7 year would be 2010.
Its Apr 2012 when he posted this.
So the 7 years is over and thats for the original owner BTW.

Lets see spend $1000. for new OEM CATS or $500. to have the ECU tuned so the
CATS show READY state PASSED to get through emissions.

What would everyone here do? Or what has most of us done?

I also was going to suggest an APR tune, you would get more HP and no more CEL
