Does your car still have the factory alarm and keyless entry.
#1
hello i have just got a keyless entry kit for my b5 1998. I was told to connect it though the wires off the drivers door system (windows, lock child lock buttons). It gets power and if i keep pressing it the lock eventually makes a little click with unlock button but wont lock or unlock car and am i right in thinking its a positive trigger not negative, both or pneumatic any help would be highly appreciated
thanks in advance.![]()

The electronics on the Passat make it very difficult to install aftermarket keyless entry or remote start systems. Those few who have successfully done it report a lot of tinkering and special adapters. You'd be much, much better off using the factory system. I assume you're trying this because the original system isn't working, and it's cheaper than a repair?

Thanks for reply might look into it but yes my factory key light stays on a shop I went to says it must be water damaged and that why the light just stays on thanks

that looks identical to my system just need to go into a 98 b5 lol

Well, as one of the people have stated before that you might need more stuff to make it work and by the time you buy the adapters and other stuff you need to make the aftermarket one work, it would be cheaper to just buy a vw factory replacement. Also have heard that people have had problems down the road with some of the aftermarket ones. I am waiting on a reply back from a friend of mine to see what he would recommend.

One of my sources say, that if you still have the factory keyless brain in the car, it might be conflicting with the aftermarket brain.

Thanks all any idea where the original keyless brain is thanks![]()

Sure, it's called the CCM (Comfort Control Module) and it's positioned under the carpeting in the drivers footwell. You can't remove it; in addition to controlling the power locks, windows, and other stuff, the engine won't start without it.

Ok I might take it to shop they sed they would fit it for £50 +vat if I carnt get it to work or get new fobs for old one thanks

It want be bad to wire that up on your passat i owrk with aftermarket alarms and stuff like that and had to put a keyless on mine. You will use the red and black for hot and ground and then use the ground wiring for the door locks. But you will have to go into the drivers door for the factory lock and unlock wires

This problem is covered extensively on Passatworld. You need to check the CCM, which as someone else said, is underneath the driver's side carpet in the footwell. Your going to have to check the wires by unwrapping them from the tape and checking for split ends and broken wire splices, you'll also have to keep a look out for highly corroded grounds. If the light isn't turning off, then it's not grounding out correctly, and it'll just keep electricity in the circuit, or at least do something strange. The CCM (Central Convenience Module) controls the interior lights, alarm, door locks, windows, heated and powered mirrors, power memory seats if equipped, and the trunk. I highly recommend you just keep it OEM, unless you really want to bypass one module to replace it with countless adapters and extra wiring (this would equal an extra headache.) If water got onto the wires, or into the CCM module itself, the wires either have to be respliced to function properly, or/and the CCM should be replaced if the board itself is fried within it's housing. Go to the mechanic, have them pull the codes from the CCM module (they should be able to do this with a VAGCOM) come back and post those codes. Buying a used CCM and diagnosing a wiring issue is about 100x easier and cost effective than what you're proposing, unless you're willing to have someone else handle it for you for nothing (I'd be weary of paying less, cause than you'll wonder, is the wiring safe and done right?)
Good luck to you, go on Passatworld and search "Central Convenience Module" or "CCM" I guarauntee you'll get a million different results, there is a new thread on there about it nearly everyday.

It is just the light on key fob it was an electric machanic who sed key was water damaged the key in locks works the central locking fine checked ccm and not fried thanks for your help anything you got let me no thanks

If only your key fob is bad, replacing the whole system is extra stupid. You can get a replacement fob for $50 or less on eBay; even a new one at a dealer is maybe $150, tops.

Light on the key FOB?
I know of the key fob with the flip-out key and buttons to control remote locking/alarm.
I know of the key with a little button that lights up a mini built in flashlight (no remote function).
Did they make one that does both (flashlight and remote transponder)?

Y'know, I thought he was talking about the little LED on the fob that tells you it's transmitting; but on reflection, I'm pretty sure the fob for the '98 doesn't have that. Now I don't know WHAT he's talking about.
trev89, are you sure you have the right fob for the car? Did it ever work?

I have two FOB's for my 99 and neither of them have any lights on them.
They look like this one. No chrome bar on the bottom. Just a chain loop on one corner.

My 2000 didn't either; my 2004 has them. I'm assuming it's a B5.5 thing. OP - what, EXACTLY, is the problem with your existing system?

Lol, I'm so confused. If your light ain't workin, replace the D@mn battery! Sheesh, problem solved.![]()

About the key fob it's hasn't worked since I got it only owned the car 6 month so not sure if it is the right key fob it's hella and nothing happens so changed battery and the led stayed on the man in electric shop says that's what happens when they get water damaged the key has two batterys with metal plate in between them. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1708248846...e#ht_500wt_922
that is the same as my key fob if this helps thanks.

I've no idea if that style key FOB is compatible with the 1998 Passat. Since it's never worked with your car, we still don't know. Try asking the person you bought the car from if that exact FOB ever worked with that exact car.
You say the red light stays on when you put new batteries in. That indicates the buttons on the FOB are stuck or the electronics in the FOB are fried. Either way, it looks like that FOB is toast.
If it were my car, I'd forget about the aftermarket keyless entry kit. The car comes with that function right from the factory. Chances are, all you need is the correct (not fried) FOB and to get it programmed to your car. The dealer will charge a good amount for this, but you don't have to go through the dealer. Do some research to find out exactly which FOB's and which frequencies your car uses. Then find a used one on ebay.
You can program it yourself. I just did this on my 1999. If I remember, I put one FOB in the ignition and turned it ON (did not start it). Put the other FOB in the door lock then pushed a button on each FOB for one second. (the entire procedure needs to be done in under 15 seconds) .They both went from not working to both programmed to my car.
If you buy a blank key, you'll need to get it cut. You'll need to search around for someone who has the right key cutter to cut these VW keys. They require a special machine.
Do some searches and reading on the above suggested topics. A little bit of information will save you a bunch of cash.
