I am in the exact same boat my friend - I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've come back to the forums after a long absence to see what others are thinking and to get my bearings. Emotional decision.

Trade-in offers were between $6k & 7K (on MSRP sales) - completely unacceptable.

You're going to regret it. Look at all the "OG's" coming back and saying how much they miss the R, and they regret selling.

I did not even try to trade my car in, and with offers like that I guess I know why. I would drop it in the ocean before I gave it away for that kind of money. I hope I can find a good home for my car as well. I really don't want to have to part it out.

Jaaayzus Christ! Glad I asked. Someone drops that on me cold my first reaction would be to drop them cold with a right-cross. Looks like I may continue stuffing my Toy Piggy and hold out till 2016.

Care to share your thoughts on the old vs. the new?

Personally, I love the MK IV styling - it's a damn sexy nut. The VI is a lot like the V, which is to say... "meh...", but it's the advances in technology you have to respect. I'm curious about the weight distribution, the better chassis and the engine. I've never owned a turbo charged vehicle and the chance to make 300+ crank HP with just software is tempting.

Well, I never planned on selling this car, at least not until it was at least ten years old.
But it looks like I'm being forced into early retirement by the end of this year, and if I have any hope of ever buying a new car again, I have to do it now.

Someone gives me $14,000 for my car (near identical to chucks mod/mileage/condition) and I'll buy it.

I really wanted a black one, but the RS I picked up was the in the right condition, price, etc.

Oh and for having rear seats that look good. Most R's I looked at before I bought mine have the permanent dents from people letting it rest on the brackets and not using padding.

It took me 1/2 hour to find the rear headrests. They've been out of the car since November 2004

Yeah, not happy about selling, and certainly not happy about the circumstances forcing the sale.

But on the other hand, I'm excited about the Golf R

I thought about the Golf R instead of my TDI. I'd love an AWD TDI A3, but The Jetta seemed more reasonable to me. This past week I've been driving the R and I'm in love all other again. I hope you stick around as I've you have contributed lots of knowledge on these boards.

I say, if you can, hold onto the R32 until at least one month after owning the MK6 R, and then
determine if you still want to sell it over the MKVI R.

id have to agree with this thought. the possibility of a sale will not change in a month. hang on to it, drive the R for a week or two solid and then get back into the R32 and see if you are truly happy with the new car before you sell your obviously beloved R32.

I love the R32 too much to keep it.
Confused by that statement? Let me explain:

If I had both cars, I would be driving the Golf R most of the time, I would be spending money on the Golf R, and all of my attention would be on the Golf R.
The R32 would just sit there, with an occasional drive from time to time, but for the most part, it would be neglected. That's just wrong! I hope to sell it to someone who will love it as much as I do, and shower it with the attention it deserves.

I still only have 500 miles on the new Golf R, but so far I am really impressed. The biggest thing that stands out to me is the stock suspension in the Golf R, it is pretty darn good. I remember driving home my R32 new back 2004 and it was right away that I knew the crappy stock suspension in the R32 had to go. Sure enough it did go, at 2,600 miles on the R32 had PSS9's. I will be able to drive this stock suspension for much longer than the old car. The comment that I have gotten from all my friends and family with the new car is "It does not sound like Bill's car, it is too quiet" I will have to fix that as best as possible, but we all know that you can never get the great sound from a 4cyl turbo that you can from a VR6. I will install an aftermarket exhaust at some point, the Golf R is just too quiet and has the fake noise coming from a speaker under the rain tray.

True. The stock rear shocks are arguably the worst part on the entire car.

Hope you find a good home for the R32 and can't wait to get a few Golf R's together to compare notes and go for a spin!

I am very happy with my Golf I do miss the sound and the extra support the seats provided at speed and as Bill mentioned very impressed with the stock suspension which is making me pause on installing the KW V3's I purchased.

Someone take this off Chuck's hands and continue down the path of happy motoring where it has lived these past years.
