Thread: oil pressure light issue

  1. 04-12-2012 03:29 PM #1
    87 fox wagon with a 3A 8V engine

    *modded cluster with tach*

the flashing oil pressure light will sometimes come on and flash for an extended amount of time randomly.... however it is NOT at its full brightness it only flashes to about 1/3-1/2 of its brightness potential...... in other words it will flash but a bit dim..... no buzzers come on and the engine sounds fine..... also the oil change is only a few hundred miles old (used 10w 40 & bosch filter) and it did this before the oil change

it will flash only when the engine is fully warmed up and will not change regardless of throttle position or rpm

am i lookin at a possible oil pressure switch or maybe a wire issue?

    thnxx

Disconnect the wire to the pressure switch and touch it against the engine or something metal. Does the light go out? If it does, it's likely the pressure switch/sensor.

I would hook up a actual pressure gauge just confirm your pressures.

i ended up changing out the switch on the oil filter housing and draining the old oil and putting in some 20w50 and some lucas..... same result

i remembered seeing a youtube video where some guy changed his oil and got a full blown oil pressure light because the filter was defective....... i had an extra fram tg filter layin around so i figured id change it as well just for fun..... and the light has been off completely since

my guess is maybe the oil just could go through the filter fast enough (it does only have 4 drain holes)
