Thread: Anyone one running a minimalist exhaust system? How brutal is it on the ears?

Now that my Corrado sees less daily driver duty, I've been thinking of different exhaust options to reduce weight and free up the flow. The decibel readings from the last several auto-x's tell me that I can afford to be much louder without getting the attention of the auto-x noise police.

I'm currently running a S2 header, TT high flow cat, TT 2.5" SS catback with 2 resonators and a Borla rear muffler.

The easy solution is to move up to the MBS 3" catback (with test pipe). This would be a little louder than what I have, but I'm thinking about going a little more crazy.

MBS 3" SS test pipe and a Burns Stainless 3" muffler and go right into a turndown. Nothing over the axle to rub. This would probably save a decent amount of weight over the current TT set-up.

      http://www.mandrelbendingsolutions.c...22-Test/Detail
      http://www.burnsstainless.com/sm-300-450-17.aspx

BUT, with ONE muffler and a turndown under the back seat area, am I going to be driving around with ear plugs? It'd be nice to get some feedback before I do anything.

Plus the bad thing is that these 2 items will run me almost as much as the full MBS SS 3" cat back.

      Thanks!

      -Wayne

The sounds are not that bad, Test Pipe and 1 Muffler.

I'd imagine with Turn downs the reverb would make it "Mustang 5.0ish"

3" MBS with test pipe and one Magnaflow + S2 = Quieter driving than with the 2.5 TT system.

Really depends on which muffler you use.

I have 2.5" pipe, no resonator, through a Momo Corse muffler. It's actually pretty quiet.

Wayne - here Noah is referencing my car. The 3" system definitely eliminated a lot of resonance inside the cabin. With no interior, you can still have a conversation without yelling.

      Definitely go with this

Were you able to adjust the fit to not rub on the axle? I'm not slammed, but once in a while the exhaust touches the axle and it drives me crazy...

Verdict has not made me aware of any rubbing on the axle, and I did not notice or hear any when I drove it last. Feel free to PM Noah for particulars, as he has been driving it around this week.

Had a 3inch straight through resonator only-side exit... it was cool for a week.... then i chopped it and had a turn down pre rear axle.... even worse... neighbors hated me from about 3 blocks away, and the car was turbo'd

Wayne, at this current point I have experienced zero rubbing of the exhaust on the axle beam. Not to say that you won't rub if you go extremely low. I will try to get some pictures today under the car.

That sounds like a great plan! (on both issues)

I recall shipping my stock 20th AE exhaust system and it ran me over $60 at the UPS store. I think I made $25 on that deal.

I've gone so far as to make a couple of "adjustments" with a block of wood and a sledge hammer where the pipe runs over the beam. I think I even used a SS zip tie around the mount to raise up the rear section a few mm. Some of the problem arises when the system gets hot and expands. Now the high point that goes over axle moves back a little and all of my hard work in aligning the exhaust goes down the toilet.

Is that an Autotech rear bar?

Rear beam is going to be very hard to beat without pile and piles of money. Better off just spending the money on a 996 GT3 as it will cost about the same to engineer/prototype/build and test

But if you want to throw buckets of cash my way....I could make something up.

I am a little late jumping in here to throw my 2 cents around but driving in Will's car with the MBS on it was nice. No drone, sounds really good. Better than a TT system I would say

I hate the way the MBS muffler hangs down and has the tailpipe kick up. Not ****ting on the part, its a good exhaust.. just not my personal taste. They sound alright, A little over the top if the car is N/A, Wills car sounded like American Muscle at h20.

The old school EIP exhausts are probably the best sounding I've come across. I had a 2.5 EIP setup N/A and traded a buddy for a 3" EIP when I went F/I. Very quiet for what they are, no cat, resonators etc. just a single straight through muffler in the rear. Not sure if they made one specifically for the Corrado, both of mine were for mk3 vr6.. fitment is near identical, just need minor trimming. Awesome exhausts though

I recall shipping my stock 20th AE exhaust system and it ran me over $60 at the UPS store. I think I made $25 on that deal.
Let me know when you get your new system
