hey im looking at buying a 2010 jetta tdi. problem is i have never owned anything but a ford so i dont have any insight to german cars. if someone could give me some pros and cons, any insight to major problems etc etc it would be extreemly helpfull. thanks!
I dont have specific experience with the Jetta, but I have a 2010 Golf TDI, which is essentially the same drive train.
At almost 70kmi now, I have virtually no complaints about my car, and the drive train has been flawless.
Just do some internet searching on any common complaints about the 2010 Jetta (body-wise).
The scariest thing you're likely to come across about the drivetrain is the supposed worry over the high pressure fuel pump, potential for failure. Honestly, it's mostly overblown hype. There have been only a relative handful of cases, and many of those were almost certainly a result of gasoline getting into the tank at some point (dealer, owner, who knows).
I suggest too considering possible long term maintenance requirements on the new-for-2010 TDI emissions system. NOx trap and particulate filter may have some replacement interval requirements (120kmi for DPF?), and costs arent well established so far as I know... Timing belt needs to be done at 120kmi. Can probably done yourself for not much money, if youre experienced working on engines.
Overall, I think you'll be happy. 40mpg mixed, 50mpg highway, 600-700mi range, feels nice, and the car is plenty spirited.
