Anyone repaired the transmission?

Saw a great thread on motor geek regarding rebuilding of the failure prone trans found in these cars. Unfortunately I've forgotten my user and password there so I can't ask there. How bad is it REALLY to repair one? I'm not fearful of tackling difficult projects but if we're talkin needing three hands an seven eyes to get the job done with special $$$$$ tools then maybe I won't go for some clapped out a8 later this summer......

I thought the majority were not the actual tranny but the "torque converter" and TCM...
