I read in the VW Credit paperwork a while back (when I was considering ending a GLI lease early in 2010), and confirmed with a phone call, that even if I transferred the car to another buyer, I would still remain on the lease and be responsible for anything happening to the car. I couldn't believe this, but that's what I recall when I contacted them. Perhaps things have changed?

Things haven't changed, that is still VW's policy. Only way to remove your name fully is to sell the car outright.
